It was fine after the anti roll bar was removed
eh?? you are driving a car without a arb?? im sure it has been replaced....what sort of engine issues are you experiencing...for instance being a 170bhp motor you should have some power....are you down on power, is the car stalling, missing or difficult to start...maf sensors do fail but a garage worth its salt should be able to diagnose.....
cheers

The rattling can only be heard when the windows are down, when they are closed the car sounds perfect.

They removed the anti roll bar because it had snapped in half and said that it should be okay without it, the engine doesn't have any problems as such, it has a noisy starter motor which i plan on getting fixed tommorrow, i was told there was a fault with the rpm sensor and the MAF sensor but it was okay to drive to Germany with, when the engine is started the engine tone changes for a second then it is fine, but when i let the engine brake and take my foot off the accelorator or change gears the exhaust backfires but not really badly just really quietly. I have only drove 1.1 Peugeout before this apart from police cars and am not used to the engine.

Probably nothing to do with it, but, on my 850 estate, when I had a rear end rattle it was the upper shock metalastic mount that had come unbonded. It allowed the bodyshell to bounce up and down and the free part of the top of the shock was striking the fixed part of the mounting. It was impossible to see anything wrong from underneath, but easy to see when the internal rear wooden decking was removed.

Went to another Volvo Dealership in Germany and had the boss come out for a drive with me, as soon as we got back it was in the garage for repairs to the handbrake, however being stupid i left the 'key' for my alloys at home after my wife emptied the boot so they couldn't take the wheels of the back to fix it on the spot. I then had the mechanic look at all the other faults i could see on the car and got exploded diagrams of all the parts i needed with Volvo part numbers and costs.

Not bad for considering the owner of the garage said that i only had to pay €20, not bad for having the mechanic for an hour and a half taking things apart and putting them together and giving me everything i need to give my local Volvo Garage!
