It seems quite complex; a pulsed laser "camera" apparently. It was the dealer that told me it was a blocked radar, alluding to the non OEM screen !

That's happened before with non volvo screens volvo dont make them but they specify to the glass manufacturer exactly what qualities they want from them. all the specifications have to be documented and laid out so they can be reproduced from a second manufacturer.

Mine seems to have three sensors on the windscreen. City Safe, lane departure warning and collision warning, plus the radar on the grille. What I do know is if the very common windscreen leak isn't dealt with, that could be a very expensive repair if all that equipment got wet. In fact, the XC60 I went to see before I bought mine had the sensors damaged due to a leak and it cost the dealer (so he said) £1,000 to replace. It also put it in limp mode, although I'm not sure why it would do that.

The screen may well have been, probably had been in reality, manufactured by the same glass company that supplied Volvo, to the same spec without the Volvo branding. I worked in the automotive supply industry for almost 35 years. It's a standard practice.

The non-OEM screen that was fitted to my V70 was nowhere near the same quality as the one that it replaced, and it started to crack after a few hours. Also, the heating elements glinted excessively in sunlight.

Since in my case, however, the replacement was necessitated because the original had cracked during removal when some rust spots were being treated, the bodyshop eventually replaced the failed replacement with a genuine Volvo screen, and the world was then set a-rights again.

These messages are covered in the owners manual and are expected under adverse weather conditions. The radar unit is indeed on the grill, if it was the camera and laser on the top area of the windscreen it would not state that it was the "Radar" in the message.
Both vehicles in my household has this type radar unit and I have seen this message on quite a few occasions when weather is poor (extreme rain, spray or snow) or even a very severe frost where heavy ice coats the radar unit. The message soon clears and system returns to normal operation.
The owners manual does cover the occurrence of these messages and lists in a table what action is to be taken when it occurs. Most occurrences of the message states that "No action to be taken". If the message persists, cleaning of the radar unit to restore normal operation is to be undertaken.
If the message is under normal conditions and the radar unit is clean then a possible defective radar unit on the front grill is probably the cause and should give fault code or codes.
Hope this helps to reassure you that most likely there isn't anything wrong and the messages are to be expected under poor weather condition.

As it happens my radar blocked message came on briefly today, and that completes the set, as yesterday I got collision warning service required, along with driver alert system service required! The last two messages appear from time to time and then they disappear for a couple of months. All very strange.
