The engine and specification of the car is stated on the information plate situated in the driver's side door frame.

That will give you plenty of information; and you will learn from there!

Not really intended for this thread but it amuses me how many members buy D3/D4 models and the Polestar them... just buy a D5!

Official figures 61mpg for D5, 65 for the D3/4 5 cyl 2014 models. D5 is longer stroke which is good for economy which is why the consumption is not 20% higher on the D5 compared to D3/4. Official figures for D3 and D4 (136/163) are the same as the testing never goes into the power regions where the additional power of D4 is used.

What will vary the fuel consumption way more is how you drive. To achieve the 65mpg is not easy, not easy at all, but I have managed it on long runs in my D3 2014 MY.

In a previous car (not a Volvo) on same day same route I have achieved 26mpg on 1 trip and 50 on another. No traffic jams etc. One of the journeys did not last as long as the other shall we say. Economy is massively influenced by driving style.

The price difference when new between the D3 and D4 was £1,250.... Nice profit when only difference was the map loaded into the ECU, which can be done for £595 by Volvo afterwards.

I bought my (MY2011) D3 (163ps) new in late 2010.

Before i ordered the car I test drove a new D3 and D5 and found the D3 gave the same punch, (similar torqure figures), when needed, as the D5. Overtaking etc. Both were manual gearboxes.

The D5 would keep pulling higher in the rev range than the D3, but I felt it was noiser and felt coarser. The D3 felt noticeably silkier.

That original D3 V70 was re-badged briefly as a D4, with a new 136ps version of the same engine badged D3. Soon after that the new 4 cylinder (181ps) V70 was badged D4 and the 5 cylinder D3/4 was dropped.

I get that but they haven’t been available new for circa 6 years? Most current owners will have bought them used, however your point might be even more valid as I guess the residual values will reflect that D5 models are in greater demand.

Yes that's what I'm finding. Made me wonder why, hence the thread...

It was only a point of interest.

The D5 is the known engine / model for Volvo, that and the T5. The also brings higher second hand prices to those models. I'd agree it suits the size of the car better.

Torque is only 20% higher from D3 to D5 at normal rpm, and 14% higher D3 136 to D4 163 so the difference isn't massive.

Anyway, 18 months into my V70 5 cylinder ownership and I'm loving it. Sold cars, with great sounding engines. I just had to get a 5 or 6 cylinder engined car whilst I still could. I manage to tow a 1,350kg caravan OK with the D3 as well. I don't push it hard as when I had company cars though as I'm paying for the maintenance now and I'm into this car for the long run....
