Lol

I've tried melting snow but it just doesn't work unfortunately. Although there is a ton of it at the top oof the bonnet, the heat doesn't seem to get pushed down near the ground.

You're right about the heat though, my missus can't stand near it to talk to me when it's at full temp. I went to see her at work once and we were talking in the car park and she had to walk back 3 paces to escape the heat.

Default High engine bay temperature.

Hello, Well it would seem quite normal then I guess, but why would Volvo design in such an undesirable characteristic? It you take the brake master cylinder location for example - directly above the exhaust manifold! I appreciate it is there because the pedal push rod, but....... This and the brake pipes gets thumping hot and I dread to think what adverse affect this has on the cylinder rubber seals! Has anyone thought about/fitted some sort of insulator plate under it? Also the power steering reservoir and pipe are affected by high temperatures since the pipe passes close to the exhaust manifold. Anyone fitted some extra heat insulation on the pipe? My p/s fluid seems quite brown ( not surprising) and is now going to be changed. Has anyone carried, or is prepared to carry out, similar - actual temperature measurements - to mine so we can be a bit more specific with the comparison? Some say I am getting into my dotage!, but I have been around cars of all sorts for over 50 years, and this is a unique characteristic in my experience. Never too late to learn they say! Thanks again folks, and still looking for an accommodating C70 owner around Cardiff to compare notes, or a friendly experienced dealer to cast an eye.

The master cylinder has been in that location on large volvos for 30 years and has never caused any failures that i have come across .. what is "very hot" to your body isnt in real terms .... maybe the cylinder is in its element operating at 60C . ( thats hot enough as to be too hot to hold ), but in vehicle temperature ranges its relativly mildly warm .
I would shut the bonnet and contnue to drive :-)

Volvo build the most reliable engines in the world. Who's to say it's undesirable? They know what they're doing when they design and build their engines, I don't think us amateurs should really be judging the way their engines operate lol.

Seriously don't worry about it. Volvo will hammer each car they built and every component they use before letting them near consumers.
