Does this mean that the only way to get the service reminder reset at oil change time is to go to a garage with VIDA (or buy your own VIDA setup)?

Cheers,

iep
yes they use the oil quality sensor now on the later cars it would put a message up if the oil got in a poor condition .

Thanks but what I'm curious about is how independent garages or DIY oil changers manage to reset the service indicator without VIDA?

If you change the oil then wouldn't the oil quality sensor be reset automatically?

Cheers,

iep

The oil quality sensor is reset when the service reminder is reset with VIDA .
When you reset the reminder by hand , the mileage/time/engine hour counters will be reset , but not the oil quality sensor .

Thanks again. So, if all the other counters are reset, how much of a problem is it if the oil quality one is not?

I'm just curious how people without VIDA manage to perform an oil change on these cars.

Cheers,

iep

In most engines the oil quality sensor checks the opacity of the oil i.e. how clear the oil is. Diesel engine oil has a detergent in it that holds the carbon from the combustion process in suspension to be carried to the oil filter where it is gathered. If the filter (and the oil) is not changed at service intervals then the filter will block and the carbon will remain in the oil and be carried round until it gets so bad the engine will suffer from lack of lubrication. The oil quality (opacity) sensor will detect the oil getting dirtier and will bring up the oil quality message as an alarm. IIRC the sensor cannot be reset until the oil is changed and running clear through the engine, and VIDA Dice is required to confirm this. Of course as Clan says you should never see an oil quality message being displayed because only an idiot would neglect to change the oil and filter and leave it until the oil quality message was displayed.

On marine diesels and other heavy plant machines the oil quality is checked on a regular basis and if the oil is found to have a higher than acceptable level of carbon then the oil is changed regardless of hours run. If the carbon level is continually too high this could indicate a fault on the engine, leaky piston rings or similar.
