having changed my 850 thermostat this weekend the bit you most likely require is just the part labelled C in the 2001 picture. on the 850 it isnt necessary to remove the power steering pump although from first glance it does seem in the way. it seems the D5 housing includes a temp sensor, I wonder if there is also one on the front of the block like the petrol engines?

The labelled C is horizontal thermostat. It can be changed on its own.

The vertical theremostat cannot and the lower screw where blocked by the power steering pump. Haynes manual also says you will have to remove the power steering pump and hence the aux. belt as well.

I am wondering if it's possible to remove the whole new vertical thermostat housing and replace with a complete old horizontal thermostat.....

The vertical design is really good for holding pens. Genius design.

Or a vase for the wife`s birthday. Give her the old one when you need a new thermostat and fill with flowers an environmentally friendly gift. The perfect gift for the wife with everything.

Apparently the new designed one's don't fail half as often as the old ones did!

And they are fitted to the T5's from around 2002 onwards!

I had a problem with my last one, it's a fairly easy job to do (if you are handy with a spanner).

Removing the Aux belt and PAS pump is a fairly quick job. Took me 30 minutes... however dealer time wise it was an hours labour.

you cannot really get to it without removing said items, I managed it once! and it's a pig with the PAS pump in the way!!

You should also be aware that the new thermostat also includes a new ECT sensor! When I ordered mine the dealer ordered both parts!

However, for future reference it's actually considerably cheaper to order the new stat etc from FCPGroton in the states, pay VAT, premium shipping, and import duty than it is to order the part from a UK dealer....

You CANNOT actually buy the internal stat component from anywhere, trust me I tried hard enough which is a shame because it's fairly easy (although nowhere near as normal as a standard thermostat) to change over.

I had a load of pictures/how to that I'll try to dig out.

The thermostat part of the assembly would be made by a standard manufacturer - it's just a case of finding out which one....

This one didn't last long though. I would expect a stat to last 5 years+

"Everything" would include your prize possessions when the divorce papers are presented on the next working day. That is SO much a bad idea for a birthday present.......
