The battery can sometimes be tricky. I mentioned earlier that mine started fine but then just died. A new battery solved it. The "best" worn batteries are the ones where you can't start the car. That way you know what to change. You could try to measure the voltage with a multimeter while the engine is running. It should be between 13 and 14V. Good luck

I've had the experience of the alternator packing in a few times, sudden drop of power followed by all warning lights on ( as per turning on ignition ) etc. Roadside recovery guys can be very good at diagnosing problems in a hurry. The recovery guy who came to me hit the alternator a belt with the ( wooden ) handle of a hammer - it was sticking.

I've just checked the battery, water is fine and is just under 12v on its own (a bit low but it was flat yesterday and hasn't been charged). With the engine running it goes up to just under 13v at idle but if you hold the revs high (3k+) the voltage goes down at a costant rate and very quikly (drops below 11v in about 5-10 secs). So is this looking like alternator or could it be something else?
Thanks for all the help |

Hmm ... so the voltage is not being regulated properly, or maybe the alternator belt is slipping with increased revs?

Thanks for everyones help.
Its now all sorted, turned out to be the alternator and/or regulator. The voltage reads just under 14v constantly now without any fluctuation and hasn't cut out since it was changed. |
