Its most likely he doesn't have any points or neg wire in the dizzy.
I have had a problem before due to the injection relay being wiring incorrectly (don't know how it became that way, but that was the issue). It maybe the starter motor switch overrides the injection relay.
The injection relay tries to ensure the fuel pump only runs when the engine is turning The Engine will run from the fuel in the manifold created during starting, but the the relay takes over and decides the engine isn't turning and switches off the pump. Crank sensor is the main source but if the relay if not working, or its wiring damaged that might also cause it.
