Well I thought about doing it.... then I looked at the outside temperature around +1.0c at midday, the fact that my garage is not heated ........ and booked it into my regular garage

I'll see what they come up with but the question is do I change the clutch as well or wait for the clutch to last it's normal life - and then get the thrust bearing replaced again when the clutch needs done ...... New Clutch £200 ish .... Thrust Bearing £20ish...

The cheapest quotation I got for labour alone was £200. It just seemed too much for a £20 part in my opinion.

Really depends on your own funds. Personally, I would get the clutch and RMS done as well. It's PoM and another 100-200k of silent smooth motoring. Also depends on how long you intend to keep the car. *chucks 2p*

- Rich

Update time......

Of course the car has not made the whirring sound when the garage has had it - they said take it to Dealer to see if they could diagnose it..... so I did and..... car would not do it and they could not hear anything but did say the clutch fealt a bit heavy..... but of course as soon as I had done about five miles the noise reappeared but then went away again so I don't know what to do.... My local Garage are really good guys and they won't do any work that does not need to be done and if they cannot trace the fault they are cautious about doing anything so...... Do I insist that they change the bearing & clutch before it becomes a permanent feature and damages something or should I just see how it goes..... Perhaps it will happen on the way to the local garage one day and I can demonstrate as it only ever happens under load but can happen either hot or cold.... Any suggestions guys as I like the car and want to keep it for a number of years yet...

Does it make the noise with the clutch fully out, if so I would say its not the release bearing. Whirring noises under load point to the turbo.
I hope I'm wrong.

Just see how it goes. A loud release bearing is not harmful to other components. Just annoying and can lead to a not so smooth take off.

Change the clutch and bearing (and RMS) if the clutch starts to slip or if the bearing noise gets too much for you and you have some spare cash.

- Richard

Keith...
It's whenever it is under load i.e with the clutch peddle fully released and you are accelerating and is more noticeable in 1+2 and a little bit in 3rd.... I think the budget required means I will need to wait at least a couple of months as it needs taxed at end of Jan......

No, it's definately the clutch/realise bearing. Having a conversion with my local indepedant Volvo dealer, he said that it was a common problem with these cars (his did it) and said it was clutch/release bearing and that it wasn't worth fixing unless you dont care about money or the clutch goes as it doesn't affect the performance or any other parts.

I elected to leave it... I still get the odd looks, but hey... I'm a 21 year old driving a Volvo estate with Cambridge United football stickers in the window.... so I've got used to it!!! Ha ha
