The nose weight is not the issue its the total mass of the caravan. I agree with your logic but if the caravan has a high MTPLM say 1800kg and being towed by an XC60 with spare wheel on rear, when you turn a sharp corner or reversing there would be high forces applied to that wheel and it could either loose traction or worse sheer off.

If you are putting yourself into a position where the forces on the tyre or wheel are such that would generate the situations you suggest then you would be in a predicament such that it wouldn't matter what tyre was fitted

Cars have towed trailers (and caravans) for many, many years with wheel and tyre profiles that thinner and smaller than the XC60 spare wheel without encountering the situations that you describe - why on earth would an XC60 succumb when previous vehicles have not?

I take on board your comments however IMO going without a full size spare whilst towing something as heavy as a caravan is not something I would feel comfortable with. Yes, you could drive straight to kwik fit however you might be on the motorway when this happens, miles from kwik fit in a unknown area. I wouldn't like to ditch the van and drive to get a tyre - equally I don't fancy driving into kwik fit with a caravan either.

I don't know enough about the spare wheel but is it has 50mph limit its not as good as the original and when towing something safety is everything IMO.

Good question and bound to be other caravaners who would disagree / agree but that's the fun of the forum ;-)

Hmm, I wonder if the aerosol can puncture kit would be a better option. Obviously this would only allow safe driving at lower speeds until a proper repair can be done.
