Default Silent alarm

The sounder can be found in a metal box situated under the car just below where the battery sits in the engine compartment. It is not unusual for this sounder to fail due to road salt etc. Hope this enables you to get yours working.
Happy fiddling, Bob.

Question Same problem with alarm!

I have read Des's problem with no alarm horn which happens to be the same problem with my 1992 940Wentworth 2.0 se. You can set the alarm/imobiliser and if you stick your head through window (OPEN of course) the doors lock and the indicators flash, but like Des, it does not frighten much in the way of wildlife. So where is my alarm horn? I noticed 2 horns under the passenger side wing, but i think they are the normal warning horns. Any ideas? Cheers Kieron

Hi,

If your car is a 940 then you alarm horn should be just infront of the coolant overflow tank and behind your MAF.

See this picture of my 940 for its location:
Linky....
Linky.... This is a better pic..

And no, this horn doesn't scare wildlife either... Just makes them idly curious!!!

My alarm is also environmentally friendly. The diagram from Vadis looks like it shows the horn to be similar to (my, single) road horn under the nearside bumper on my S90. Could this have been commndeered to replace decent horns (which i want to replace with a couple of decent Fiamms.

Just re-read this and realize it makes no sense whatever.

And i hadn't read/noticed the previous posts either. (These dizzy pills are doing me NO good)

The second horn has corroded away and the remaining one is feeble, so the fiamms beckon (unless there are better ones). I'll look under the batter tray for the alarm right NOW

Hi Guys,
Sorry to butt in and I know I shouldn't realy be here...BUT..
I have the exact problem with my S80 all lights and no noise. I have been told it's a recognised fault that requires a new siren to be fitted under the bumper front right... But can I find it ?????? Nobody seems to be able to show me the way.. So maybee you can help.
Cheers,
Silver.

Default Horn Confusion

I had a 740. The alarm horn was on the right hand side (as you look from the front) just in front of the strut tower.

On the 940 it is as shown in the rather nice piccy in an earlier post. However, if it ain't there you've either suffered an alarm thief or you have a sounder which is in a metal box on the left side (looking from front of car). If you have this you should also have a sticker under the bonnet on the plastic panel in front of the radiator which says 'siren with battery back up'.

To see exactly where the siren is, look toward the front of the car in the driver side wheel arch. You should see the back of a box with a nut in the middle of it. This is the box that contains the siren. The siren is fixed into the box with 2 nuts with captive bolts on the siren. They rust and often snap off when you try to remove the siren from the box. The box is held in place with 3 bolts. One of the bolts is accessible only from under the bonnet. The other are accessible from underneath the car. One at the front & one at the back of the box. If you remove the box, give it a good going over with Hammerite or similar coz the boxes rust like crazy.
Average price for replacement used siren from fleabay about £20.
Before replacing siren cover all siren seams with silicon. Nothing you can do about the business end of the siren of course.
Most common problem with the siren is not the ni-cads or electronics but the sounder itself. One of the sounder terminals rusts and falls apart. I've pulled these apart several times & always found the same problem. Of course you could always break out the wires from the electronics & mount a horn on the roof!

Happy Motoring

Thanks everyone,
I did eventualy find my silent siren. It was located underneath the drivers side wheel arch hidden by the the inner wheel cover. That has to be removed to replace the unit and I found it easier to remove the front right hand indicator unit as well so that I could see better. Got a replacement from Volvo Spares £10 plus p&p.
