I'm getting my changed as soon as i get the kit, as i checked the sticker in my engine bay and the service history and it was last done 2005, by a volvo dealer.

My haynes manual says every 8 years or 80,000 (whichever comes first).

I phoned a garage and asked them for a quote on installing a timing belt kit and water pump and was quoted £110 (inc vat) which give or take a tenner is the going rate for that kind of work.

and mike, you can buy the kit for £100 max, plus a water pump (varies from £50-£100), so the quote you have been given seems way too high.

It certainly seems that way. I will shop around and get some more quotes, thanks for your input.

Hello,
Does the service history have any Volvo dealer entries?
If so, a call to the Volvo customer services will help you find out more about what the dealer network has carried out on your car.
But I would imagine they would have placed a sticker under the engine bay around the timing cover or ECU lid to state this.
I concur with the others, the price is very high and indeed the water pumps seem like robust wee fellas.
Cheers

Now ive had my car for over a year and had tons of work done by a mobile mechanic and a couple of garages, i've learnt some garages really do try and pull a fast one!

So now I price up the parts myself and then get a trusted opinion on roughly how long the work should take, so effectively you can price up the work yourself.

The last step is finding a decent garage that actually doesn’t mess about and does the job correctly.

I thought it was all Volvo dealers but I just double checked and it's not so I don't think I will be able to find out.

I agree. It's just strange because I have been going to this garage for years and they have always been really good to me. I think I will ask them to have another look when I take the V70 in next week to see if he made a mistake because a high quote for the timing belt just doesn't fit in with their normal service.

I think I will definitely get a quote from the main dealer as well though. Plus I will see if I can get a discount if I book both cars in for timing belts one after the other as I know the V70 is due as well.

Thanks for your comments guys
