There was an article about nitrous oxide kits on Fifth Gear ages ago.
They concluded that as long as it was fitted properly, AND the engine was in good shape, it would be ok. They stressed that any weakness in the engine will soon show up if you put nitrous oxide in it. That included worn piston rings, cylinder linings, or badly seated valves (which may have been ok when new, but worn/corroded/burnt now). In their test, they chose a diesel VW Golf. They specifically chose a diesel one for the higher compression and 'stronger' engine. If their article is anything to go by, I guess if you are sure the engine is rock solid, you'll be ok. Incidentally, I used to also custom off-road vehicles on some program that used to be on Sky. I never watched it for the 'sport' aspect of it, I just used to enjoy watching the ones with nitrous oxide kits blowing their cylinder heads off, but then I'm sure they weren't done properly. They would have been set up for maximum possible power for a single event, as opposed to safely increased power for the long term. |

![]() Really its up to you, just weigh up the pros and cons, but what a grin it would be to have it! I wouldnt think you would have to declare it to the insurance, (if you only used it off road ![]() If you did declare it, you may find it hard to get entetained insurance wise, just keep it disconnected ![]() As for your engine, if its in good condition and you are careful I wouldnt think there would be a problem but thats a risk you take, or not Good luck and if you do fit it, put in on youtube!

Or, just save your money and don't bother with insurance. After all your insurance policy policy wouldn't be worth the paper it was written on if the car was involved in a sufficiently serious bump (which doesn't have to result in a fatality) for the coppers to come and have a good look.

i am about to run nitrous on my mk2 escort without any problems, only to be used on the strip and have declared to insurance company with no problems as they are aware its not being used whilst on the road. i transport bottles disconnected and in boot or another car when on the road.
it will not kill a standard engine if used sensibly for example just use 30 or 50hp jets, if you run a rev limiter it can burn pistions out, there is no reason why you couldnt return it back to standard if you want to sell just remove and fit blanking plugs or replace the manifolds with another ![]() |
