I really hope those flat and ossified rubbers substantiate clan's diagnosis. if so, the next step would be sourcing new lifters and rubber seals, again in the hope that once back together the tapping noise has gone. still too early to see the light, but maybe a bit closer nonetheless?
Quick work !
He Has measured the valve clearances first hasn't he , or is he checking when the rubber are replaced ? You get a better feel with the feeler blades when the rubbers are worn you see .

will have to enquire on that one. I have tried to mention clearance disks but to no avail so far. and I'm at a loss on what exactly to to order and where from

no joy on eBay, they only seem to have hydraulic tappets

here maybe?

http://www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts...ifter/1000317/

and will these come with the seals?

(thanks clan for your kind help so far)

No you do not need cam followers ,
These are the various sizes of shim which sit on top the cam follower ...

He is aware of what valve clearance is isn't he? Modern cars have been hydraulic ( no clearances to worry about ) for about 30 years now so he might not be familiar with valve clearance !

You need to measure the valve clearance first . get each one written down ... compare to what they should be , and you have to choose thicker or thinner shims to get the clearance correct . On the other hand all your clearances might be correct within the limits , then you do not need to take any action . BUt it is important to know what the clearances are now with the cover off .

senior mechanic at the garage is a man of few words, but certainly old enough to know this. will try to clarify tomorrow.

let me try to resume my meagre understanding: if clearance measurement has to be made in advance I guess I'll have to keep the existing followers and order the necessary shims from skandix. but where to source the new rubbers (one of them crumbled as soon as touched)?

Yes keep your cam followers , it is the shim on top which is made in various thickness's to enable a certain gap to be between the cam lobe and top of the shim .. You need a base measurement of the gaps you have now first before you can determine the size of shim needed for each cam follower .
Have you tried the volvo dealer for the rubbers and a cam cover joint ? With nearly 3 million 240's made there is sure to be some demand for them .

They are all solid followers on the red engines , volvo never changed them to hydraulic .
That part above is a metal valve spring cap !

This looks like a rubber in good condition which goes on top the valve stem : when you fit them the angled end of the rubber points UP .

so first guess was the right one... many thanks for your patience. will try to ascertain the garage's valve clearance awareness degree tomorrow. one last doubt before facing a restless night: will there also be need for a valve compressor tool such as this?
