I converted a 1983 B21A to Luminition many years ago. Dead easy job, utterly reliable, advanced ignition timing, improved fuel consumption, no maintenance. I have had 3 other cars with Luminition, and found the same.

Once you have done it you wonder why the rest of the world ever bothered to go on messing with points and failed condensors.

The 1970-1990 lumenition was indeed very reliable but that cant be said for the later ones from say the last 10 or 15 years which are made differently ...( i have run 3 classic cars on them since 1972 to very recently when i went to engine managment ..) Other friends have run later ones and had lots of problems with power units and optical senders .

indeed many high performance and race tuned engines (especially in the United States) have mechanical distributors with points to tune to optimum performance - such set ups need sconstant attention.....having said that cutting edge performance isn't what I am looking for from a 1979 244 DL!!!

no not really , points and electronic ignition only set the timing point , not the advance curve ...

You can alter the dwell angle with points (ie the gap) which is preset in the case of Luminition. May be there are competitive situations where you would want to do that - improving the spark at high revs at the expense of low, perhaps?

yes the Luminition dwell angle would be set by the width of the plastic vanes which break the light beam in the distributor , no fancy electronic processing such as in the volvo B21E Bosch system ...

So it seems my best bet is to hope to try and find a setup from a B21E car....?

This might prove a little difficult! How many B21Es are there left?!!

Well if you can find one with a M46 gearbox , i'd fit it , it will transform your car ... better still a B23E :-)

Yeah I had wondered about fitting an M46 at one point - what engines were they fitted to?

Steve

P.S: anyone with a dizzy from a B23E for sale, PLEASE PM ME!
