Volvo Forums is awesome!
I got this noise from my car this morning. It was fine last night, although it cant really be heard (much) with the windows closed. It might be completely different but at least I can print out this thread and give it to my garage. Last time, Volvo Forums correctly diagnosed a hole in my inter-cooler, ages (and a few £100) before the garage came to that conclusion too. Thanks! |

To save this happening again, have a look at the rubber replacement part from here http://www.partsforvolvosonline.com/...oducts_id=8259 It replaces the resonator, and won't split again. |

Its a resonator, to 'baffle' noise. Its no more than a plastic box to transfer pressurised air. The engine is slightly more 'throaty' with the rubber pipe on, not loud. But with 2 big Jubilee clips on each end, no matter how much thump i give the engine, I know its staying put on tight and won't break (as often) like a resonator.

Couldn't be more angry.
Got my car recovered to Graham Wrightson Volvo (Specialist) in Oxton, Merseyside. I provided a printout of this forum, and a copy of the replacement part from ebay. I then called them to remind them that I provided these documents and they are on the front passenger seat. I have just received a phone call that they have completed 3 hours worth of diagnosis, and a smoke test. They are not just able to "dive in" and go straight to the problem despite what a customer tells them. They have "procedures" that they must follow. 3 hours! to come to the same conclusion that I found in 30 seconds on here. And when I asked about the replacement part, the response was "I will go and look at the paperwork and call you back". Which amounts to "I never saw the papers you left in the car, even though you called up and told us to read them". Last edited by Jeffxc90; Jan 11th, 2017 at 13:41. |

Thats appalling. Another Inde in Southport is the same. Even when you ask them to fit a part, still in its sealed wrapper from Volvo, whilst doing another job, they refused because 'they didn't supply it" - its from Volvo, still in its packaging ! Was this the same garage that took ages to diagnose your intercooler issue on your earlier post ? Anyway, You'll know not to go back. Last edited by colinbos; Jan 11th, 2017 at 14:14. |

If they do what you ask and are happy with the work, how they're branded makes no odds does it ?
I use a mechanic who has no specialty or affiliation, but is honest and logical. He does lack a bit of flair when considering alternative/new products (i.e. using Liqui Moly Purge etc) but apart from that he is spot on, for me. Im surprised the Volvo Inde wouldn't have a clue about this fault. I understand its a common issue, hence the aftermarket replacement silicon pipe that they make, to help. As you say though, this forums collective sharing of previous faults and remedies makes it a great place to narrow down that annoying problem. |

Hey folks I know this is an old post but I'm hoping someone may be able to help.
I've also just started to get the whooshing noise from under the engine so thought I'd investigate. 2013 XC90. I've taken the under tray off and had a good look around. All pipes (that are easy to access) and clamps appear to be secure and no cracks or holes etc. The only thing I noticed was that there was a reasonable amount of oil on the turbo to intercooler hard pipe and the connection to the resonator. This pipe also has one of the screw fixings closest to the resonator broken. The one towards the front of the engine is still in tact so it was still very secure. I removed the hard pipe to check the seal in the resonator and this is where I'm a little confused. The connection between the hard pipe and resonator had a jubilee clamp with a screw through it. The screw went through the clamp, resonator plastic, seal and into the hard pipe. Is this normal??? The reason I ask is the seal has deteriorated and split a lot where the hole from the screw is. I'm hopeful this might be where the whooshing noise could be coming from but could be mistaken. I haven't taken the whole resonator off yet as it looks pretty tricky. It is very solid however and looking up to the connection above it certainly doesn't appear to have a seal problem. Nothing is loose and no oil deposits at that end and certainly hasn't "blown off" as I've heard others seeing. I've ordered new orange seals but wanted to make sure this screw was supposed to be there before I reassemble the whole thing and not fix the problem/destroy another seal. I'm also open to some more ideas so feel free... Finally I am a little concerned as I feel the noise is very noticeable/loud but the leak from the seal I mentioned above would be too small however I hope I'm wrong. |
