Mine was on about 110k miles when I bought it, still pulls like a train with no issues, the key thing is the sevice history. Find a car with a full service history and the car will be fine. I paid a bit extra for mine to get a well looked after example as I was planning to keep it for a while, mine was originally owned by a doctor, full Volvo history including the paint and body checks.

Thanks for all the replies. As a newbie on here, I'm very impressed by the response I got to my enquiry!

I'm now reassured and confident that I'm making the right decision.

There are very few cars around that can match the value for money that the S/V40s bring, just keep quiet about it, shhhhh our secret

Out of all of the cars I have driven and all the ones my wife have sat in, we both agree that volvos are the most comfortable. With the possible exception of a (real) Citroen DS

The ride in an S/V 40 is hard (compared to a RWD volvo) but the seats are so good that the SO does not complain /at all/ about her back.

The service history is worth checking, BUT any engine can be degraded by too much time in traffic or a boy racer with a big right boot and no respect for a cold engine. Oddly enough about two thirds of engine wear relates to the type of useage a vehicle is subject to and how it was driven.
The same applies to mileage because there is a huge difference in the wear that results from motorway mileage and inner city stop and go driving.
The best owners are old folks that only drove at the weekends and did long motorway trips to see the kids. The worst is car used as a taxi in the middle of a big city.
