There's a universal joint at the bottom of the steering column seen from inside the engine bay. These can seize up giving symptoms. Spray a load of WD40 or similar all over it and get someone to move steering preferably with car jacked up. See if it makes a difference.

looking at the history in my paperwork the belt kit and waterpump was changed at 107k back in 2011 now its done 181k , do you think this should be done still
the volvo specialist has told me that this engine didnt have the aux belt fault that drags the timing belt off and knacks the engine this was the later type , mine is a 163 2005 d5
he says he wants £260 to fit a timing belt kit and water pump , doesnt sound too bad to me
also just seen it had a gearbox and awd system oil change done last year at the price of £170 so all cool

If the replacement was an OE Volvo unit it should be fine. If it was changed for aftermarket, then they don't have the best reputation for longevity, so a call to make.

Yes, you mentioned that, but that won't be an OE pump though at that price, I guess. Frustrating it was changed in the first place. Depending on how long you intend to keep it it might be worth going OE?

Others will be able to advise who makes the OE pump, I'm sure.

250-300k+ if the rest of the car's up to it, but if you're only running another year or so, and providing it's still smooth, I'd likely leave alone. OTOH for £260 incl the pump, that's good value, providing what's being used is at least decent.

Personally I'd only have genuine Volvo parts fitted on the cam belt area and don't forget to have the tensioner changed as well. I had mine done by the stealer, purely because if they screwed it up it would be easier to chase them for a new engine....
Belts, pulleys, alternator pulley clutch thingy = £550

On the steering, if it's on 3/4 lock and you let the wheel go it will probably go to full lock on it's own. As mine's done this from new I'd say it's normal. Full 4 wheel alignment can't hurt though (assuming it's done right).

I agree with TG - the steering feels as if it's on "tippy toes" as you approach the extremes of lock. I know the alignment's bob-on, too.
