It`s shaped like that as another pipe will travel by the one you are refitting and so will clamp both together for tidiness and so they do not vibrate or knock on one another.

Usually they get rusted to kingdom come and get broken while dismantling so no big deal really.
I can attest to the rust bit - the clamp is made out of flimsy metal and holds a cooling line to the oil return pipe. Mine was all but totaled when I replaced my oil return. I cleaned it up and painted it and put it back on.

Both of these hoses are fitted pretty tightly so I agree that you could do without for a period of time. Having said this, I recently had to replace the very small rubber hose that connects two small diameter cooling hoses in behind the turbo due to leaking. I believe that the reason for this leak was exposure to vibrations over time so maybe it would make sense to reinstall the fastening hardware at this second location to prevent premature failure of both of these pipes.

That's great cheers mate - it's at that point where I'm checking everything possible related to the part to see if I can identify the cause to this irritating problem.

Just the mating surface of the turbo left to examine .

I've lost a lot of oil over the last week very unimpressed but finally have a new pipe, 2 new hollow screws and gaskets so hopefully this will be all sorted and I'll be able to look back and laugh...or maybe not

I'll post an update tomorrow

Just a couple of things. Have you checked to make sure the turbo return pipe isn't blocked? Also at the risk of sounding like a particularly helpful German, are you using the correct grade and type of oil? A turbo oil feed pipe would be a potential candidate for oil leaks if you had a high oil pressure problem.

That fairlead is there for a reason it's to stop fretting and stress vibration causing a failure of a critical component that's why volvo, went to the trouble of fitting it

I haven't checked the return to be honest - is the only way to check by taking off cleaning it up?

I've been using She'll Ultra helix 5w40 by the way - and I have been thinking about this one too!

The Shell Helix 5W-40 is a good oil. If you've been using it for a while then I'd say that the oil isn't causing the issue. The only way to check the return pipe is to remove it unfortunately. Are you using a proper Volvo oil filter with the check valve?

hi spetsnaz recently did a oil change with shell helix ultra 5 40
and although i originally had a oil leak from the turbo return seal that's
now fixed. this oil seems to find ways to escape from places that didn't
originally leak dont know if after time the new oil will condition the seals etc
and finally stop.

So the new parts are fitted.

The clamp is coming in from Sweden that should be worth fitting for the sake of £5.

Every serviceable item on this car is new. The oil and every filter and even the coolant and all the jubilee clips haha.

Nothing has been done on the cheap with aftermarket garbage =)

But I am sort of thinking of changing to a different oil next time - its very interesting if this oil is finding a way out. It just seems a bit silly doesn't it that a sports car made to take oil of a certain viscosity suddenly starts leaking all over with a certain oil.

Oh, and it lost a litre of oil which needed to be topped up - ouch.

The person at the garage (specialising in alfas and fiats) took the T4 home for lunch to see if it leaked at all. He said the car was very nice and clean and drove very nice - He was surprised but I wasn't. Going from Fiat bravos to a Volvo is quite a difference lol.

Everything seems good for now - I'll keep an eye on it. thanks everyone so far =)

Ok, those who I talk often with will know that this leak reoccurred again!

However, I have an interesting photo: Look at the leak this time.

Not from the banjo joint as thought but looking like it is coming from the small joint to the side:

this is annoying - but looks as if the part has failed after just half a year.

But why would this happen more than once. One bad part is rare, keep having faulty genuine Volvo parts is impossible surely!

all input welcome.

Cool

If the leak is not too bad, I would just try a can of stop leak, or change over to using a high mileage oil. The 2 cheap ones are Castrol GTX 15w40 (Summer only), or Valvoline Maxlife 10w40.
