How nifty
Hello, I didn't know they did that. Do you have any other data? For example: Is there a year range which pertains to this feature? Kira

After looking today with a colleague and rocking the car on the handbrake in first, it appears the "new" top engine mount i put on the car 2 years ago (square type) has failed.
It looks fie but you can see where the rubber has been sliding down the outer casing and there just seems to be alot of play in it! id suggest this be a checking point for others too as this seems to be a premature failure! I'll get it off next couple of days to check for certain! |

Right got to the bottom of my "clunk" noise.
It appears that for some reason, volvo decided to design the top mount with an elongated slot for the bolt to pass through. My bolt had worked its way right to the back of this elongated hole (the bolt was closest to back of engine bay). I have just undone the cross member (anti sway bar?), loosened the bolt on the top engine mount and positioned it as far forward in that elongated hole as i can and re bolted the cross member down. Taken it for a test run and EVERYTHING seems tighter! worth checking! Thanks again, oh and mike....love the vid |

A quick update:
I removed the top mount crossmember this afternoon and inspected the rubber bush, it moves around far too much in the housing. I packed out the bush with 1/8th rubber, which I inserted in the gaps between the bush and aluminium housing at the front, rear and top, and although the rubber is a little too easilly compressed compared to the original mount, there is a definate reduction in engine movement. Previously, when in 2nd gear, accelerating hard then coming off the power was acompanied by a "thump" - after packing out the bush, hard acceleration and deceleration is almost competely smooth, without the feeling of something "taking up the slack". I've just ordered a new original top mount off ebay, I'll report back on the amount of play in a new bush compared with the old, and hopefuly post a couple of photo's. Rich - the bolt through the top mount was already at the front of the slot, so nothing to be gained in re-locating it. In any case I'm not convinced that this would have reduced the amount of relative movement between the bush and housing. John.

Update:
Fitted a new top mount, took a couple of photo's, there is minimal front to back movement in the new mount, and very little vertical movement. The old mount was well worn, with obvious front to back movement of the bush within the mount housing, as can possibly be seen from the photo's. Car has done 71K miles and is 7 years old. Having now replaced both the top and bottom (torque) mounts the car feel much better to drive, with noticably smoother gear changes from the autobox. HtH - John.
