Hi here is a exploded view of AC compressor clutch . I have not actually stripped one of these but have stripped and replaced a clutch on a VW AC pump . From memory it looks very similar .
http://www.swedishautoparts.com/V70/...-ac-parts.html

The pulley should rotate freely on its bearing with AC off and is locked to the driven plate by an electro magnet to turn the pump shaft. Remove your AC belt to check the pulley bearing first , if it rough or noisy then replace either the bearing or pulley. The only other part of the clutch that could make a noise is s loose driven plate rattling on its shaft . This is locked on the shaft with the small bolt in the center. If its loose try tightening if it works then remove , clean and reassemble using some thread lock on the bolt. It was a few years ago that I did this but it may help. Have you had the gas pressure checked ? As a low gas and lubricant pressure could make the pump noisy .I recently thought the AC pump on my wifes Kia Rio had gone but having the gas replaced cured the noise completely. If it doesn't get really cold then its a fair bet that the gas is low . Ask a AC specialist to check it out.

When I had this problem earlier in the year, main dealer re-gassed system and whine dissappeared. Apparently, low gas can couse whine and if ignored can damage the aircon system - they suggested I turn air con off if the whine re-appeared. Hope this helps.

Had whining problem on mine (57 plate V70 D5) compressor replaced by local garage, still the same. Garage then brought in aircon specialist who tested gas and found moisture in it which he said causes whining. Evacuated all old gas then recharged - perfect

Specialist told me moisture in gas causing a whine is a common problem on the v70s so may be worth trying before paying out a fortune for a compressor that may not be needed.

In addition to that A/C gas holds the lubricating oil used to lubricate the system in suspension i.e. the oil goes around with the gas to lubricate the innards of the compressor hence, if there is moisture in the gas as above, time to get it all sucked out and replaced with new gas (which will contain the oil).

PS. c70man if you posted your problem in the correct Section you may have had a better / quicker response than you have had on here. Although the A/C bits are probably the same this Section is for S80 '06> / V70 '07> / XC70 '07> Volvos, we are a helpful bunch but there may be others with a '53 XC70 like yours in your Section who have had similar problems.

Seems a very common issue. Whines when running but otherwise seems OK.
I had a can of R134a with pressure gauge knocking around in my stores of car related detritus... Lifted up the scuttle at the LHS, attached the can and it was reading a little low but not void. Emptied the can and now all I can hear is the click of the clutch kicking in. Happy days!
