Also let me know how your dealings with Ian Cattanach goes since he is nearer to me than Ron, though I am very happy with the quality of Rons work.

You are right, Ron is a very sound guy.

Very good discussions with both referrals from yourself and DavieC. I am surprised at the varying prices for each service I have mentioned. EG my car is 2000 x reg C70 T5 GT AUTO. The cars mileage is 44K in June this year so hardly a high mileage car and well looked after as all 6 previous years have been stamped. No-one apart from Ian mentioned the fact that next year will be the most expensive as its cambelt change time! Cheers Ian. Volvo both in England and Scotland have huge variations in service costs and to be honest as long as the parts are genuine and yes I would prefer a volvo specialist, then Volvo dealers are out. All volvo dealers are pointing me in the direction of a full service. Why? this car I am sure needs its standard 18k service with the 7th year service bits added on. Quoted less than £120. Any thoughts?

I think his full service is £145, though in addition I had a good deal more preventative maintenance done such as plugs, fluid changes, (brake and ATM), timing and auxilliary belts and tensioners change, pollen filter, fuel filter and new rear discs and pads). All Volvo products.

He was also good enough to throw in an oil filter to use on my next intermediate 5k oil change which I will do myself and also a can of Volvo injector cleaner to add to my juice.

Also in Inverness is Ian Cattanach a Volvo specialist. I have never used him but a few of my collegues have bought and serviced cars through him and only have good things to say about him.

There is another bloke who has a garage out near Craigellachie, near Elgin. Although he isn't a specialist he has a very good reputation and looks after a few of my friends Volvos

Keith,

It sounds as if you have done your research and come up with the best deal.

In fact the timing belt and tensioner replacement is not a fortune and can be garage done for less than £150 including parts.

The only caveat is what the Haynes manual says:

" Timing belt renewal at 80k miles"....NOTE..." it is strongly recommended that the interval is halved to 40,000 miles, particularly on vehicles which are subjected to intensive use, ie. mainly short journeys or a lot of stop start driving. The actual belt renewal interval is very much up to the individual owner, but bear in mind that severe engine damage will result if the belt breaks".

I changed my first belt at 60k, but that was on a then 4 year old car, I have just had it changed again at 7 years old and 100k.

Yep!...there is always someone ready to p*** on your parade!!

Cheers, Terry

Hope it is the best deal you can only give it a try ? If things go t@*s up then I will be going down to Ron. Both him and Ian sound good and they are both Volvo specialists. Glad to be pointed in their direction.
p.s. he didnae say a thing about you but he did know who you were!! LOL

I'm looking to bring this thread up to date. We're moving to the Elgin area next summer and wondered if there is any update to specialists ideally in Morayshire but anywhere north of Perth would do.
