Well after picking up our XC90 D5 last week I have started using DR. Doing the recommended 3-2-1 purge first (use 3 times the recommended dose in the 1st tank, then twice on the next tank then the normal amount) I'll post my findings as I go along

I have been using it since september last year and noticed an improvement straight away, so much more responsive, i always buy supermarket fuel (except asda) and although i didnt notice an obvious improvement in MPG the car definately revs through the range much better.
If your vehicle is running a bit sluggish i'd say its worth the punt. |

Things improving...
On the 3rd tank of fuel now so using DR at the recommended dosage (10ml per 10ltrs fuel) and have noticed that the engine seems to be a bit quieter (not as much diesel knock) and there is definately less smoke being kicked our of the exhaust on acceleration. The MPG on the dash readout is creaping up as well but this will be confirmed as I track the consumption on Fuelly.com (see my sig!!)

It's always best to talk to the Volvo dealer before using any additives. In general terms there is no need to use a fuel additive if you use good quality fuel as it already includes additives approved of by the vehicle manufacturers.
There is a good case for using some fuel additive if the quality of the fuel is suspect, BUT it does make a lot of sense to use one manufactured and fully tested by a major engine oil or additives company. If you use the wrong fuel additive then apart from clogging the fuel filter, it can cause failure of some plastic components in the fuel sender unit and even degrade seals in the injection system, so it is worth checking with the Volvo dealer and using a good quality product. |

I`m on my 4th tank now after doing the 3-2-1 dosage that's recommended. I would definitely say its quietened the diesel knock down. One thing I would say tho is it would be nice if they provided a way to decant the Rhino diesel from the large container into the dispenser I paid extra for, as I lost a little bit pouring it. (had to go buy a new clean funnel) not really noticed any increase in MPG`s yet but will do another full tank calculation soon and see.

Yes I am, It definitely runs smoother since using it. I would say a little more mid range grunt but nothing to write home about. MPG`s is still only a marginal improvement but the big thing is for me I know the injectors and fuel pump are being lubricated and the much smoother running.
It really is like using the posh expensive diesel. That's the best way to describe it. It has almost completely got rig of the diesel knock sound from my 2.0D I would almost call it refined! |

The manufacturer can only write a one page web site, apart from the Paypal page! The link above gives almost no information, so that means it is probably filtered industrial alcohol mixed with Bio diesel if you get lucky. If there is no Bio diesel or low ash 2 stroke oil mixed in to the alcohol the lubricity reduction can kill a worn fuel pump fairly quickly. Any solvent will clear injectors of gum (Even petrol) and/or raise the octane rating, but I hate to think what the long term effects will be on the injector seals, high pressure pump seals and fuel tank plastic parts. I bet the ingrediants cost less than a quid a gallon, as the web site looks like a ten quid domain special and only took a weekend to write. It's normal for injectors to rattle and there are big differences in engine sounds with temperature and oil viscosity changes in addition to the normal seasonal change in diesel fuel additives required by EU regs. Company house free public info from CH web site: Name & Registered Office: DIESEL RHINO LTD EMSTREY HOUSE (NORTH) SHREWSBURY BUSINESS PARK SHREWSBURY SHROPSHIRE ENGLAND SY2 6LG Company No. 08522513 Status: Active. Company Type: Private Limited Company Nature of Business (SIC): None Supplied Accounting Reference Date: 31/05 Last Accounts Made Up To: (NO ACCOUNTS FILED) Next Accounts Due: 09/02/2015 Last Return Made Up To: Next Return Due: 06/06/2014 Note: The address listed is the company registered office, which appears to be a mail box one costing about a tenner a month. The company registration fee is about 60 quid a year and Paypal costs less than a real business bank account. Top quality fuel additives made by a major oil company can be effective if you live outside the EU and have to use poor quality diesel, otherwise I will stick to known fuel stations and a direct feed injection cleaner if I see an increase in fuel contamination of my engine oil.

A few hours on a Sunday morning motorway trip will often clear gum or Carbon from injectors and will even burn off fuel contamination from the engine oil (Apart from the higher flash point Bio diesel). Injectors can rattle, but that does not matter, the knock is more interesting as it's engine temp and oil type or condition related.
