Way back in the 1970s (yes, I know that for most of you that's ancient history!) I began my interest in environmental matters (in good company with the likes of Jonathon Porritt and Prince Charles!) despite its being in most opinions distinctly cranky at the time. A chicken farmer in Devon had gained a lot of publicity when he ran his car on methane from his hens, and a few people jumped on the bandwagon and marketed conversion kits for fitting to any car. I bought one but never had it fitted unfortunately. It was designed to connect to a gas cylinder in the boot, all very unsophisticated by today's standards, but apparently some people did manage the conversion, and the opinion was that engines ran better on methane than on petrol.

It's amusing now to hear all the eco-talk and to know that one was boring people to death with it all some forty years ago. It's good to be ahead of the trend sometimes!

I'm afraid the war dept was way ahead of you. There was a national provision to convert vehicles to run on methane in WW2 because of petrol rationing.
