Mmm, difficult one really. Had a T5 manual for 4 years - fab car. Recently came back to '850 world' with a 2.5 20v GLT. Performance wise the T5 obviously leaves 2.5 standing. But the question is for a ' good all rounder'. With not at all bad performance, slighlty better fuel consumption, a little less complicated to work on, a little cheaper on insurance...........IMHO the 850 2.5GLT just takes it

I have driven all of these engines (owned a 2.5 20v 1998-2001) and of course, T5 is fantastic (the police also thought so!!). But the best blend of performance and economy is the 2.5 20v that still lives on, albeit in a modified version in today's S40/V50 in other markets than the UK (Sweden for example).

Voted for t5 as I have had a few volvo's and considering there bigger 2.3 and 20v turbos there more efficient on petrol then the other sister's.

As an all rounder which imo includes the odd occasion where you need to accelerate with some urgency then the T5 engine pips it by a galatic mile. You can drive it as quickly or as slowly as you like and it performs as smoothly as silk without hesitation. Last year I had occassion to use an n/a 2.0 20v manual for a few weeks and was quite shocked to see the petrol consumption in the same range of consumption as my Rica'd auto R. As for the lag issue compared to my last turbo'd car you would be forgiven for thinking the T5 didn't suffer from lag but I think that is more thanks to the torque of the engine when at lower engine revs than the spooling characteristics of the turbo.
Blue if your debating a T5, which I know you were at one stage recently, and you have come as far as to ask what they are like the best thing I can advise you to do is go for it whilst you can, find a good one and I am sure you won't be disappointed If your ever in the Essex area drop me a PM you can come for a ride in mine

Yes im still thinking about it, well more than thinking really, im half heatedly looking for a 854 CDt5 or a S70 CD t5, ive had a few turbos before, inc a escort and a couple of Saabs which i liked very much but then both had low mileage , its the fear of a 160k+ Turbo that worries me.

Surely getting around turbo lag is easy, dip the clutch, up the revs and ease the clutch back in?
That's what I do anyway |
