6mm of pad is huge just over half worn another service or two left in them . , that's a scam for sure . Same with the discs , if the faces are clean they should be quoting you MM of WEAR on the faces ...this should be checked and noted as part of the service ..

On a related subject,

On my last MOT & service, (car is serviced by a local mechanic as it's 10 years old now) 8 months ago, I got "Rear Brake disc worn, but not excessively" on the MOT. I didn't get thickness or anything like that at the time, and was told they didn't need changed yet.

To ask a stupid question, how would I know when they do actually need changed ?

Yes, I was invited to have a look; pads are somewhere between 2-4 mm.

The MoT limit for pads is 1.5mm. Mine failed on having (just) less than that thickness last year, also on the rears. Unlike yours, it was the the outside pads that were the worst worn and the Volvo dealer had actually warned me that they were getting low at a service just a few weeks before (but it was January and I was trying to put off the job until the spring before doing it).

....and that would also be classified as a "Dangerous" defect meaning it would be a criminal offence to drive the car until it had been repaired - i.e. you could not (legally) drive it home or to another garage.

1.6mm and that's a pass...

Daft, isn't it? The brakes worked perfectly fine!
