My 54 plate has the Auto button & LED half way down the stalk. Maybe it came in on 05 MY?

Yes is the answer to OP if your wipers are the same as my 2003MY.

Remove the cover behind the rear view mirror (it can be prised away gently), disconnect the wires, replace the cover and you can manually operate the wipers using the rotating control on the wiper control arm.

I've been having similar problems and after changing the sensor and doing lots of research I have concluded that the windscreen is the problem - it is not the original. Non-genuine windscreens can cause problems, especially if the original had IR Reduction coating.

Might that help?

Interesting; this confirms something I discovered a few weeks back. I'd always believed that mine was a MY2004 (registered in Nov 2004) but according to our local dealership it's actually an MY2005 based on how the front wipers fit! It also has the button on the stalk for the rain sensitive wipers, so we can switch them on or off. Default is off; we have to press the button to activate.

I believe my windscreen is original, I'm just going to go with the disconnection of the sensor anyways
