We sometime see cars driving along the motorway with a wheel bouncing up and down on the road surface. It can be a sign of a faulty shock absorber, but on occasion is has been a tyre defect.

A good tyre fitter might be able to inspect the tyre and see if it's out of shape.

I have also read on here somewhere, not in xc90 forum, but a v40 I think that there has been a wheel bearing type noise and it turns out tracking was not quite as it should be. The two rear tyres are brand new, and it seems that its the fronts that are causing this noise. I dont want to fork out for new front tyres just yet aS they have around 5 - 6 mm tread, but if it drives my wife mad then may have to, but then if its not, then two tyres have gone to waste and my wallet takes another bashing.
"Strange chunky tread". Are you sure they are not winter tyres? Winter tyres have strange chunky tread and are noisy

I did ask the volvo garage this exact question but he assures me they are standard tyres. How would I know if they are winter tyres?
Plus, just been reading other posts with similar noise and some one suggested swapping back tyres with fronts, if its tyre noise would this make a difference?

If you post a photo of the tread pattern up here members will be able to tell you. If they are and you've got winters on only one axle then make sure it's ok to swop axles, you must be fwd. I know when I had Michelin winter tyres put on I couldn't believe how noisy they are but I've got used to them now. Winter tyres have more diagonal treads as oppose to more straight lines

Winter tyres have a number of small sipes in the tread blocks. As the tyre rotates the sipes open on contact with the ground to provide bite. The sipes squeeze out any snow as they roll off the surface.

I thought that Winter tyres were marked as such on the side (and that 'normal' tyres are now marked as Summer these days)?

Just looked them up on line and they are Maxxis Maruader. and they are an all weather tyre.
They have loads of tread on them, cant see any edge wear on inside or outside.

I really am not convinced its tyre noise. yes there is some tyre noise at speed, but its a constant noise, the noise I am talking about almost a pulsing noise, which increases with speed.
Not sure what to do now as two volvo dealers have found nothing, the supplying dealer said they could not hear any noise at all, I am sure its brake related, maybe a fraction of warp is just rubbing enough to cause a noise.

My local dealer will not change anything unless they are sure its that, bet if I was paying they would change items.
