RE: Whirring noise !!
Hi Scott.
So did you replace the PS pump as well, or are you just getting a new alternator? Handy little trick the screwdriver thing isn't it? I learned that from a PROPER mechanic. Some Volvo 'technicians' could learn something from one of those!! Oo-er controversial! Later, Dan. |

Dan
no the power steering pump seems fine, unlike my ear x( the alternator is making the noise, dont know if it just needs a good lube or if it needs replacing, i'll let the garage sort it. did the alternator change from P1 to P2, as if it does need a new one i'll go for the one from the breakers. i'll also get them to lube the gearbox as that feels awful compared to my 2.0T thanks for your help mate scott |

dan
the mechanic just had a look when we confirmed the booking for the work (on the way to school so easier to pop in than phone) and he recons it could just be the belt, would a loose belt cause the altenator to make this noise ??? hope it is, save the wallet a little cheers scott |

Either too tight or too lose will cause really nasty noises. Had this on the Spit. Halfway to Harwich from Leicester to catch a ferry back to Holland and I had to stop and relocate the alternator the noise was that bad!

RE: Whirring noise !!
Hi.
Yes a badly adjusted belt could be a contributing factor, however if it has been doing it for a while, then the bearings on the alternator are probably worn from the uneven load the belt would have been exerting. As long as they know what noise they are listening for you should know if that will do it. My guess is you will probably need the alternator as well. Hope not though. Later, Dan. |

RE: Whirring noise !!
mornin
the altenator did seem to make noise when i put the screwdriver on it but if this is because the belt is loose it could just be that. the car is used for the "school run" and shopping, no massive mileage so fingers crossed it will just be the belt. cheers again guys for your help on this, i'll let you know the outcome scott |

RE: Whirring noise !!
here we go, the latest update
the car is serviced, at a local garage the missus likes and for some reason trust, hear say and the like. 120K service, new pads front and back, new disks front, £430 so, start the car and the noise is still there, guy checks it after "I" open bonnet cause he cant find the release catch, and states i need new tensioner pullies for the aux belt, so total looks about £550, and i have to pick the part sup myself cause volvo dont deliver on saturdays !! think i need to look elsewhere for a decent garage, anybody tried any of the ones in the Members Pages, i dont mind paying the cash i just dont want to be shafted, in the W.Mids otherwise Karl would be an option. your thoughts appreciated as always cheers scott |

Nearest one I know that can be trusted is near Tamworth (junction 10, M42). That is C.P.Motors, Pooley Lane, Polesworth, nr Tamworth. Telephone is 01827 - 894983. They have their own website and keep new and used spares, do repairs and servicing and also sell Volvos. All the best, Peter |

as for the repairs here we go full service £54.50 strip brakes front and back, and the gearlinkage £30.00 strip and replace aux belt pulleys £23.50 so total labour £108.00 air filter £14.10 fuel filter £26.27 brake pads £42.93 brake pads £32.34 sundries £2.50 idler £12.13 oil filter £7.79 plugs £19.28 discs £98.78 flush £8.50 wash £3.50 tensioner £47.74 lubricants £23.50 so total for parts £339.36 plus vat totalled £525.64 so not to bad, maybe the missus does know something about this garage !! anyway, the whiring noise turned out to be the tensioner and the idler was replaced just to be safe. the gearbox now feels fantastic (thanks dan) and all in the car is great again thanks for all your input on this one guys later scott ps, compared to my service at volvo, £100 parts £300 labour i dont feel hard done by at all. |
