Have you had a full four wheel alignment carried out? If not that's the next thing to try. Sounds like worn suspension bushes but might just be geometry issues...

Hi there, I have similar trouble I bought a 2004 the steering seems to "pulse" when moving slightly on the move at say 10 o'clock or 2 o'clock as you look at steering wheel, the steering moves from one side to the other, also on a full lock the whole car judders and feels as if it is being pushed rather than driven and coming off motorway or decelerating hard the car wanders... Bit worrying, can anyone help.... Also is it still possible to get these recalls done through dealers I have read about, (VOSA website).
Many thanks in advance Chris and Sam |

Suspensions bushes, wheel bearings, track rod ends... could be any of these.

What colour fluid is in there? It should be green CHF. I've looked at a few Volvos recently and the amount that have red ATF or black/brown burnt fluid is quite worrying.

Hi, all. We recently experience the "jerky steering sensation" described in an earlier post. My wife first noticed the problem while driving home from work and waited until I drove the car the next day to see if I also noticed the strange behavior, which was very obvious, but hard to describe. Essentially, it felt like the sensitivity of the steering was randomly changing. It didn't always happen, but when it did, the loss of control was uncomfortable.
Our MY 2013 XC90 R-Design is under warranty. The dealer did not find a mechanical problem, but did replace the computer module for the speed sensitive steering. After one week of driving since the repair, we have not noticed the strange behavior. Let's hope it's fixed. And perhaps this post gives others something to consider if experiencing strange steering issues. |

Im having same problem
Started off with genuine volvo wishbone with no steering and no braking problems, changed wishebones bottom ball joints and brake pads with non genuinr volvo parts all at the front for MOT as the as they were all worn, now steering wheel is crooke slightly and when i brake the front seems to veer to the right but the steering turns to the left slightly , having wheel alignment done tomorow see if that fixes it ,if not my local independant volvo specialist is going to drive it and give me a diagnosis. Ill let you know |

just spent another £280
having the old rear bushes pushed out and new ones pushed in on myold arms and 2 new balljoints all genuine Volvo parts ,as my local Volvo specialist told me its always the rear bushes the front ones hardly ever go, so save yourself a few quid and get em checked and just change the rear bush rather than the whole arm. |

Same problem
Just brought a xc90 04 reg same problems. Fitted new rear engine mount, track rod ends, and rear bushes. In mine it's the steering rack that is the problem. But signs of shoddy rack fitted previously. Now on the hunt for sensibly priced steering rack. Only paid 2k for car so happy to throw a bit of money at it.
