Well so far my discussions with Volvo UK are not going well.
They are using all of the old arguments to try and avoid making any contribution towards the cost of the repairs. "your vehicle has covered over 105,000 miles and has not been serviced within the recommended schedule" I need to wait until I get home before I reply to that BS to give them the exact details of the service history. But if memory serves it was serviced around 18, 36, 54, 72, 90 and 99k miles. Only the 99k mile service being carried out outwith the dealer network, but that was carried out less that 6 months after the 90k mile service, and was carried out by the independent dealer that I purchased the car from in February 2018. If my understanding of the service schedule for the engine it is 18k miles or 12 months. So a car which was bought at just over 4 years old, and was serviced 6 times in 4 years within the 18k mile service intervals I think it meets both conditions for being serviced correctly. So I am now left with the argument that the car has done too many miles. My only potential argument is that the EGR Cooler has lasted about 35k miles there or there abouts. |

certainly sounds like your car has met the correct service schedule, so don't really understand where Volvo are coming from ?
as someone else said this is a known design problem with this VEA engine and not a normal consumable part. Iain

These later updates are making me glad I decided to not replace my old S40 with a VEA V60 or XC60 and instead wait a few years and get an SPA car.
Unless Volvo sort their attitude, it isn't going to do much good for residuals on the early VEA engines. |

I thought I'd post up my experience today at Volvo Taggarts in Glasgow. Had the dreaded EML/Turtle of Doom display intermittently for last little while and had a indy Volvo specialist diagnose an EGR fault who stated 'likely a policy issue' so would be worth asking Volvo.
I took in my 2015 V60 D4 VEA (190) at 76k miles with a hint of apprehension at the possible outcome having read some of the less positive stories on here. Initially they were going to charge £105 alone for diagnostics but when I challenged this said they wouldn't if it was indeed an EGR/Cooler issue. Thankfully it was. As it was a policy on that car the cooler/EGR were replaced FOC along with a software update with the only charge being £90 for the manifold pipe as apparently not under the policy briefing. Overall I was extremely impressed with the staff there and obviously pleased to get it done 'under warranty' as technically expired (?). They said if it hadnt been under the policy it would have cost around £1700. I hope others that are having similar issues are lucky enough to get a considerate local Volvo dealer. Although one would hope that if it was a Volvo wide policy there should be no issue with this which seems not to be the case from some of the posts here. Wish me luck that the Turtle of Doom has been banished to Volvo's rehoming centre. Kind Regards, Phil |

I had my EGR fix done also at Taggarts Glasgow and was impressed like you by the staff and the general organisation.

Is it really the case that anyone unfortunate enough to need this attention to their vehicle EGR components has to hope that their chosen dealer will bother to make out a case to Volvo UK for a contribution? Because that's how it sounds...

Someone mentioned that Volvo UK have put an arbitrary car age limit of 4 years after which they will not pay for the repair. I’m sure a helpful dealer will smooth things through but ultimately it is Volvo UK who will give the ok for the work to be carried out FOC. My car is 4 years old in March and will have around 130k on the clock by then...

Mine's four next month, but at least the necessary work appears to have already been done. Still a worry though.

Yeah it was me that reported the 4 years policy.
I took mine in on the Thursday, the 4 year anniversary was the following Tuesday, and was told if I wanted it done FOC it HAD to be done on the Friday or Monday, not a day later. It's amazing how easy it is to suddenly re-arrange your diary if there's a pressing need ;-)
