I had a new Jaguar XF delivered in September 2010 (I think) and immediately ordered some Winter tyres as I usually derive to the alps at least once a year and believe that the increased low temperature performance is worth it, on balance, for me in the South East.
We had lots of snow that winter and my winter tyres had not yet turned up, I arrived at the office and no-one else had bothered to turn up. Zero grip in 4 inches of untouched fresh snow. It took me 3 1/2 hours of digging and pushing to get me back out. Regardless of the position of any switches or the accelerator pedal, one rear wheel would just rotate slowly without moving the car at all. When my winter tyres finally arrived the following week, I could drive happily in fresh snow.
Lots of snow only happens where I live about once every 5 to 10 years, but I'd rather have the extra grip available just in case. When it does happen, I'd like to still be able to get home ( a colleague was trapped overnight on the M11 a few years back and I don't wish to be caught in the same situation).
^^^^^ this!

I’ve been in that situation at least four times where I would have been stuck for hours had it not been for my winter rubber. It’s not just a slight improvement in slush, ice and snow - it’s a transformation.

I fail to understand why this thread is still running. It is obvious that tyres designed to cope with winter conditions will perform better in those conditions than those that are designed for summer conditions. The issue is whether it is economical to buy winter wheels and tyres.
In the case of someone driving 20k miles a year in all conditions, then I can see the justification, both from the driving benefit and the economics.
In the case of someone like myself who covers less than 10k a year, lives on the south coast, and avoids going out in the very unusual event of snow and ice, then the economics outway the benefit. I know one of you will jump up and down on the safety issue. I have been driving for nearly 60 years in all sorts of conditions, on a variety of tyres. We had snow far more frequently when I first started driving, I learnt to drive accordingly, and that was without all the gizzmos we now have that are supposed to help!

The thread is still running because :

- it’s an interesting subject

- some of us takes ourselves far too seriously

- some of us don’t take ourselves seriously at all but enjoy a good bit of heated, detailed debate

I do understand your point and agree with everything you say from your perspective.... but the choice to to spend time and keep following the thread long after its content was likely any benefit is that of the individual member alone...

Oh they're no use at all - I tried them once and they caused Global Warming.... and in-growing toe nails.

So does anyone now wish they had fitted winter tyres or are you finding your summer ones up to the job. I’m sat here on a balcony in 🇿🇦 wondering if I’ll ever get to drive mine in snow

No one is ever going to admit that lol,,,,,,,,,,,, I love winter tyres, if everyone had them fitted then there would not be the sitting in traffic 12 hours, they should introduce a law same as Germany, if you are out in snow and get stuck with out winter tyres you get a fine.

Had to go into the Peaks Friday night so took the V60 with it's winter tyres just in case - it snowed hard at times but all was well. Today went back to Ladybower, but with it being daylight and A road nearly all the way took the XC90 on it's summer tyres. It was fine, I just took it easy on the 2 mile access road to Fairholmes car park which was pretty icy in places. Coming back the bus was stuck on an icy incline. I thought I might need to get the salt out of the boot, but with it in AWD I managed to carefully pass the bus and get on my way.....
