I think you're right Ian, as i said i never had to do anything on my manual heaters (all auto) but seem to recall seeing a bracket in that area for the heater valve.

Here is the heater control valve. No clips or screws that I can see, and it seems to wiggle enough to feel like it’s loose.
I haven’t investigated the silver panel it passes through before the firewall so will check today. Edit. The pictures won’t load the right way. Sorry |

That round disc could be a blank where the clutch pushrod would have passed through the bulkhead.
The valve appears to be secured to that plate which is mounted against the bulkhead. Is it possible to see, on the engine side of the bulkhead, any fixings from that plate which pass through the bulkhead? Inboard and about level with, or slightly below, the brake master cylinder fixings.

There are some fixings in the engine bay firewall which can be unbolted. I’ll get these removed tomorrow and see if that allows removal of the valve. |

Well done Chris!
Looks like perseverance paid off! Fingers crossed you now have a leak free cooling system!

Leak seems to be at the front of the engine bay, on the right hand side near the oil filter. It appears to be dripping from underneath the part highlighted in red. Is this the water pump? Wasn’t leaking before and only seems to be happening since I drained the system and replaced the coolant. Any ideas? |

Start her up, get her up to temperature and give that hose a squeeze (with gloves on). As Dave says, hopefully just a perished or not tight enough hose but that's where my HG blew. Didn't overheat but squeezing that hose caused coolant to spray out of gasket between the head and the block. I'm sure it's not that, but that's how my blown HG revealed itself...
