I don't think that I'd recommend an XC60, although it does have significant attractions. On a vehicle which cost (with options) about £40k I wouldn't expect to have encountered:

(1) Ghost indications on the front parking sensors, which sometimes activate when I'm reversing down a deserted driveway
(2) The automatic parking brake sometimes refuses to release, seemingly randomly
(3) The rear tailgate doesn't always open fully, causing me several nasty bruises when I've nutted it
(4) The satnav is completely woeful: I have no confidence in it whatsoever
(5) The 3 headlamp switch positions are unnecessary
(6) The 4C chassis options aren't particularly worthwhile, although I have mine permanently on "Advanced" and do feel this offers better cornering than "Comfort" and "Sport"
(7) There are more squeaks and rattles than I'd expect
(8) It was delivered with a faulty DAB radio module, which required three separate visits to a dealer to rectify
(9) Two separate campaign recalls within a year
(10) The vehicle sometimes refuses to recognise one of the PCC keys

On the plus side, it's great for a trip to Ikea, accommodating huge amounts of flatpack, and cruises well on main roads; the D5 engine also goes well - though it's not a patch on the BMW 3 litre 6 cylinder I traded in. Overall I'd give it a lukewarm seven out of ten.

I agree to a degree, the XC60 is worth about £25000 which is about what anyone with a bit of a notion for value should have paid for theirs. Loading them up to be a £40k motor is a waste of money in my view.

1 No problems with reversers they are sensitive and a godsend, fronts even better

2 Not used the handbrake up to now so no problems, maybe they will start now I use it!

3 Would that be the electric tailgate? An option I purposely did without as it seems to annoyingly slowly whirr open and I like to be in the back quick when I decide not a slow motor.

4 Standard Sat nav is overpriced.

5 probably but I haven’t worked out which is which anyway!

6 Standard chassis is just right for most .4C is another gimmick to fiddle with and go wrong in my view.

7 No squeaks or rattles on mine. I am half deaf and the radio is turned up so I will never hear them anyway.

8 No DAB signal in the Dales so the standard FM is fine.

9 Touch wood no recalls

10 PCC another gimmick I can do without.

All in all a pretty good car 9out of 10 and good value compared with Hondas and Mitsubishis similarly priced and I would certainly recommend it.

Taking it up to compete with 6 Cyl BMWs and Mercedes MLs may be expecting too much and disappoint the recipient of such comparisons.

Get your dealer to sort out the issues that's what warranty is for. Ask for another cylinder too - about 600cc should do the trick....

Interesting comments - potentially

1) front sensors are switched off when you are reversing - hence the different sound to let you know which ones are working
2) try putting your seatbelt on
3) not the fault of the tailgate - use human eyeballs to look at where you are going - it is what they are for
4) satnav is excellent as attested to by several people on these forums
5) 3 positions are required to use correctly
6) waste of money
7) you are not buying a Rolls Royce, and even they have noises
8) fair point on this one
9) would you rather have the Toyota situation - Volvo are to be praised not condemned for this
10) another waste of money

The net result is that I see one of your 'complaints' as potentially reasonable, the rest are either incorrect or a matter of opinion and certainly none justify the title of your post.

You may also have noticed that you are in a very small minority regarding recommendations as to future purchase.

Agree with WIMorrison on all points.

What amazes me is the comments about the sat-nav - it is excellent and on a par with audi/bmw systems in previous cars I've had except its much easier to use IMO

I feel strongly enough about the SatNav's capabilities to contribute too. Others have have commented very succinctly on all the points you raised, but I'm afraid your SatNav assessment alone undermines your posting as a whole. It's a pity, because there may well be some valid points in there.

6500miles and apart from an odd rattle (that will get attended to at first service early next year) No problems!
