Both the ABS Sensors have been checked and the ABS control unit was returned to me after being repaired (re-soldered and re-sealed) although I have just sent it back to get it looked at again and tested and I am pending the result of that in the next day or so.

Where did you get your ABS unit repaired and how much did this cost you? Is this the same as the ABS pump?

I'm still wondering if this is likely to solve my problem, as the local volvo specialist offered a refurbished ABS unit, and I'm thinking that they refurbish by re-soldering them. Is there any other known problems with the ABS pumps?

Thanks
Gunnar

Hi there Gunnar,

The 1st thing you need to do is have the codes read on the car. Depending on what codes are read, tests may need to be carried out eg. on the abs wheel sensors to see if they are working properly or not, wiring checked etc.

Research shows that 99% of the time, it is the ABS module that needs to be re-soldered and this will resolve the problem. Unfortunately though, there is no guarantee that this is surely the problem, as is the case with me althought the module has been sent back for testing and possible re-soldering if required.

There are numerous companies that offer this service but after some research, I went with Jim at Volvotech (01794390271 £80) who has repaired many of these modules with a great deal of success. Basically, once you have put the module back in and take your car over 20mph, the lights should go out on the dash. Unfortunately though, this has not been the case with me, hence my questions to other Forum users on here.

The module is different to the pump.

Hope this helps.

That helps. The codes have been read, and if I remember right, it was the sensor for the ABS pump (I might remember wrong). The ligth is not on constantly, sometimes it is on from begninning, sometimes it comes on when I get over 20 mph and sometimes it is off completly.

Thanks
GT

Sounds like a similar fault to what I was having.

Where abouts in London are you?

Get someone to check your sensors out and investigate the problem

I'm in Archway/highgate, normally I use a Volvo breaker in Dalston. They read the code and told me I probably need a new ABS pump(i think), and that they supply refurbished ones fitted for about £250 (not sure what the exact figure was).

I was hoping to cut that cost down a bit... I have MOT coming up in october, and the ABS light will be a MOT failure..

If you can use the easy to follow guide available on this forum, you can remove and re-install the ABD module yourself and just get it repaired from Jim who I told you about earlier. That should save you around £170 and hopefully solve the problem.

All that preparation and now......

Read all the posts, bought the E5 Torx socket (had to buy a set AUD50!) got three bolts out , but @#$%%&^ rounded the head on the final one. Any ideas how to recover my dignity, reputation and appease SWMBO ("every time you try to save money it ends up taking too much time").

Hammer a socket onto the rounded end and try to undo the bolt.

If that fails, grind the head off, remove the ECU then tackle the bolt.

Thanks-my sockets don't go any smaller than E5 but will try the grind off - although space is limited down there.
