One of the best things about Fuelly is that it tells you what car people are talking about. (Bongobobby)

By the way - My Fuelly figures suggest that the trip computer in the car is over reading my MPG by around 5%.

We've switched over to summer diesel now, but I don't know if my improved mpg figure is a result of that (as there was still winter diesel in the tank when I brimmed it) or just the fact that I did a long run. |

How do you know you are on summer diesel? I would expect the storage depots will still have a mix in their tanks.

I believe the fuel companies are only legally required to supply winter diesel until 15th March, so it could be at busy petrol stations there is a higher chance that the winter fuel will have been used up and replaced with summer diesel. If that's not the case then it bodes well for increased economy in the coming weeks when summer fuel will definitely be used and the ambient temperature gets higher. |

It is not just the petrol stations it is the storage depots that supply them. If you imagine they are 100% winter diesel up until the date you mention, March 15th, they will then start taking deliveries of summer diesel after that. You then get a mixture of the two in the tanks that will take a while to work its way out. The same happens in reverse in Autumn. The busier the depot the quicker the mix levels reduce but as you can still get snow in Scotland in April they will not be rushing to get to 100% levels too early.
As you say though, if you are seeing economy increasing already then the signs are good. I have noticed from my last fill, about 10 days ago, that my mpg has gone from 41.5 to 43.5. This is the first improvement since November. Maybe a mixture of slightly warmer temperatures and the fuel mix you highlighted. I'm looking forward to getting back to the 46-48mpg I was getting last September.

The improved mpg on yours will be down to distance and temperature. Is that the VEA D4 or the detuned 5 cylinder D4? Of course the saloon is the best most arerodynamic body shape for mpg which all helps.

A colleague has the D4 VEA 181 and is very impressed with it so far as it's returning 47.0mpg after 6000 miles of 30 urban/70 motorway driving. That said he's not one to exploit the power so it may take a while to loosen up.
Not a direct comparison but my D5 215 manual is currently averaging 46.0mpg according to Fuelly and 46.5mpg according to the computer. My driving is a mix of 35 urban/65 motorway. Urban driving kills it completely and I reckon I get around 30mpg round town even with Start-Stop active, however on motorways the computer regularly sits at 57-63mpg cruising at 75mph. Coming from a high powered 4cyl diesel (Renault Laguna Coupe dCi180) to the 5cyl D5, it's more relaxing to drive. The Renault used to beg to be driven and dump all its power between 2000-3250rpm, whereas in the D5 I can pull from about 1300rpm - there's no 'turbo kick' but I find I can waft everywhere even more quickly than I could in the Renault. I do have 'DrivE' mode engaged a lot, particularly around town and on A-roads, however with it switched off I love the performance and the deep 5-cylinder growl that I get at 2000rpm upwards :-) |
