It appears to have everything going for it: one previous owner, only 41,000 miles, lots of history, looks nice... probably every bit as good as that one that sold for £10,100 last week... but it failed to reach its reserve at £5,100 in the last auction. The seller is having another go, maybe this is a bit like brewing home made wine - if you keep putting it into the strainer it all gets through in the end.

In spite of that motor car selling for £10,100, I still think 240s top out at about £6,000 - so we'll see if this one reaches its reserve this time :-).

Alan
This second auction ended up at £5,700, still not meeting its reserve. I have more than a sneaking suspicion that the highest bidder in both this and the first auction was a shill one - being the same account (the anonymised eBay name having exactly the same score).

This looked like quite a nice motor car, but its failure to reach the reserve twice (in spite of a bit of shill assistance) does rather confirm my theory that 240s top out at £6,000.

I wonder whether we’ll see this motor car for sale again? I can’t help thinking that if the highest bid had been genuine the seller would have accepted it.

Yes I have just seen that. Looks like a nice one. He lies in his advert again though as he says he is happy to answer any questions! If its anything like his last, every question I asked was batted off with well it will be sold by tomorrow you had better be quick, if it’s still around in a week I will answer your questions then! Very strange guy!

... so in the next two days there will be a frenzy of bidding taking the price up to £8,000 where it will stall... but the reserve still will not be met.... you know the rest :-)

Another second or third time around sale:

... I think the 'original seat covers' must be original to Halfords :-)

If I hadn't seen the asking price I'd have said this was a £3,000 motor car: quite nice but no provenance and some bodywork damage. I rather suspect this one will be around for a while.

This one is a bit rough around the edges, but I quite like it. The seller says the motor was changed for a later 2 litre, so I'm guessing it has FI. Personally I think that is a pity, but some may like that.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185175642...EAAOSwoYRhmTpF

The motor car is spoiled by being LHD.

What will it make - well it would be a middling car, so about £2,500, but it is registered as an historic vehicle, so 50-100% more. I think it might make £5,000 with a fair wind.

:-)

I'd like to know a bit more about this one. From where was it imported, makes a difference, South of France, fine , Afganistan, not so good!
I also believe if one were to see it in the flesh l dare say it's not so pretty.

Go on, Alan , I'll chuck my hat in the ring---£3700!

That 242 has a set of Torslanda alloys fitted, and the original headlamp wash/wipe set-up; as the front seats appear to be a different colour to the rears, being more orange than red I suspect it might be a Mediterranean car, though probably not Italian (there's no sign of the little indicator repeaters on the front wings that were mandatory in Italy at that time).

It would be nice to know what engines it has and originally had (B200/230 or B20/B21) as that might give some further clue to its original country of registration.

The seller doesn't give very much information, I agree. This one will be very much a niche market: 2 door, LHD,, probably a speedometer in km, perhaps no history before it was imported... the market is probably down to a very small number of potential buyers already.

If it was a similar 1985 motor car it would be a middling one and might make £2,000 to £2,500, but it is an historic vehicle, so it will be interesting to see how much premium that factor is worth. My previous guess had been 50% to 100%, which is quite a wide band and might put this motor car somewhere between £3,000 and £5,000. It will be interesting to see what happens and therefore how much the historic premium is worth.

Alan

I wonder whether the Swedish spellings (Servicebok med garantibestammelser and Instruktionsbok) are a clue that it may have come from Sweden, or perhaps another Nordic country. If they are the originals then I rather suspect there would have been local translations if the motor car had been sold into a Southern European market.

Just my thoughts Alf.
