Always wise these days to replace shoes when you have your discs changed ..

when I bought my S60 the previous owner had bought mintex discs and pads all round BUT ONLY fitted the front ones...leaving the rear ones in the boot for me to fit

I did the lot myself in about an hour....when I took the old discs off BOTH lower shoes had the brake material coming away due to corrosion of the shoe metal surface, so lucky I did it when I did

it was a nice little job actually.

Just had mine done, they were fine, but as the whole thing was apart new ones and new discs went on anyway

Default Worrying!

Hi, we have just purchased (last week) a 2001 V70 Torslanda estate. Now I discover this thread! Very worrying. We purchased the car from an indy Volvo dealer, think I am going to be having a word with them about this real soon.

Sorry for all those of you who have suffered catastrophic failure but thanks to all for the heads up.

We have owned three previous Volvos and this is not the sort of problem we have come to expect.

Regards
Les

I've been reading this thread with great interest. I have a V70 P2 2001 Torslanda with 98,000 on the clock. Rear disks and pads were changed at 87,000 which was when I bought the car.
Recently, I noticed the handbrake needed adjusting to bring it back to 5 clicks. Then I heard little bangs and grinding from the back brakes, then I noticed the near side caliper seemed to be seized judging by the temperature of the wheel (steel).
I decided to have a look, as I have done the same with my older Volvos, a 240, and three 740s. I was expecting to see something like the problems in this thread, but found that the shoes were still in one piece, but very worn.
The problem was that the holding springs in the middle of the shoes were missing, or rather displaced. They were rattling around the drum, taking gouges out of shoe linings here and there, they were badly deformed due to the hammering they had taken. This meant that the whole assembly was floating about in the drums.
They still managed to hold the car and a caravan on a hill though, but if I had known the state of them sooner there is no way I'd be using the car handbrake for that, or indeed towing with the car.
I replaced the shoes and the springs, £23.00 for the shoes and £8.00 for the spring set. Feels much better now, but to get the shoes in I had to shave a bit off the shoes where they fit onto the expander. I had already sanded down the lips on the drum. The old shoes were Ferodo and the new shoes are Bendix.

I have a 2008 S60 D5 and have become quite concerned about the rear brakes doing damage. It has done 50000 miles so far, but when do I change the rear brakes?

yours is too young to have any problems . I would always change the rear handbrake shoes when you change the rear discs which is usualy after you have worn out 2 sets of rear pads ...

Age wise, I'd probably agree with you but my car's not yet worn out any rear pads (only 50k on a 7 year old car) but the handbrake shoes were delaminating.

It will never be an immediate problem on the 3 year old S60 above

yours is low mileage for it's age which means it probably sat around for long periods with the handbrake on and damp ... which doesnt help ..

Did mine at 94k , 7 yr old car , first set of pads only half worn and one shoe liner starting to come adrift if you looked really closely. V70 D5 2003
