RE: RICA 280 vs. 304
Hi Dan,
I agree with your comments in part but there is little point in revving a car to 6500rpm when it develops its peak power at or close to 5500rpm. Swifter progress can be made by changing up at or soon after the point at which the engine makes its peak power. The only exception I've come across so far is Saffron C70's car which pulls like a train up to around 6800rpm; but that's probably because his peak power is at 6700rpm. |

No, and I can't say when I will either. Too much to do all the time...

RE: RICA 280 vs. 304
>If you never go above 4500 revs, buy a diesel.
> >Mind you then you would only use 3000 I suppose..... > >They are there to be used you know. ;) Dan, you don't seem to get my point! 1) Most Volvo drivers are not "boy racers" and, whilst appreciating the power of the T5 with or without TME/RICA they don't want to rev the nuts off them to get to that power. Thats one thing I love about the T5, the power is there from low(ish) down. 2) My 120k engine (which was in good condition, full "double" service history & well looked after) died on me in Germany as the auto-box holds the revs on the red-line for ages to get to any sort of decent speed in less than geological time. I firmly believe that, directly or indirectly, holding the revs at that level for a while (minutes, not hours) was the cause of the failure. 3) I hate the way the auto box "holds" the revs for too long before changing gear when accelerating hard. I drive the auto T5 a lot more relaxed than both the manual T5's I have, I still rarely rev to 5,000+ though, even in the manuals. Re the diesels, I love them and I drive various turbo-diesels frequently, however I don't like the "hitting a brick wall" feeling after changing gear. Power.. power.. more power.. lots of power *change gear* ... nothing. If I didn't like the smell of petrol so much I'd probably opt for a diesel next ;)

RE: RICA 280 vs. 304
I am not a 'boy racer' as you put it, but I have used the full rev range of every car I have ever had and they were/are all as sweet as a nut.
Most were still going strong at 150,000 miles plus. I didn't mention the auto box which is a known 'weak point' on tuned T5 engines. So, yes, I got your point entirely, but it doesn't change my POV. Cheers, Dan. |

I wasn't suggesting you are a boy racer, I'm sure many Volvo drivers do rev through to the red-line, but I'd put a fair wedge of cash on saying that the majority do not... I love the auto box because it's so smooth, but I just don't like the way it behaves when 'pressing on', therefore I adapt my driving to suit the car, rather than the other way around. But to clarify - I use much more of the rev range more frequently in the manual T5's

RE: RICA 280 vs. 304
Awesome and entertaining thread :)
7 pages and i only asked Don a question. His silence is noted in that he cannot and will not back anything he states with fact. (IMO) I'll let the vultures in now, but please dont ruin the thread, its been a pleasure to read :) Cheers all ;) |
