I dont know Elvis and i dont think i have mentioned him? And yes its not necessary , as is most tuning things. Its up to each person to decide what they think is necessary. what you describe is "desire" and thats a drug when it comes to cars !!
. I love very high end car hifi, does not mean i had wasted money on silly designer products claiming amazing things (check "Critical mass Amps " and see its rather the same story. A nice cheap but well made amp that costs £200.00 .take it apart to add $40.00 worth of components . Re badge it and sell it for $$$$$$$$$ silly money . And they fell for it !) If a car is worth a lot then maybe a £500 custom remap is fine. But not on the base value of my car . Also its not required as i have had great results on other quality "stage ones" that have given me what i needed .

And as mentioned.... how come very very few people have UNDERSTOOD the OP's original post ? Its all gone off like he was asking for the best , when he clearly was not . He wants a nice basic map.

Interesting comments from some people who where made aware of this thread coming in on my email.

the 195 is if you go to them in Banbury. I got them down from 275 each to 200 if they come to my work and do mine and the boss's v70.... this thread has turned to a slanging match between the opinionated now when all it was intended to be was a list of the interested so I can get some offers from the reputable companies mentioned herein!

why ?

have you asked me how often i use it. what setting it is on ? etc

Its was purchased just to quickly see what another possible 20bhp feels like

for that reason it is perfect . I can sell it on for the same money easily, take it from car to car or even lend it out on this forum to those that are happy to use them. They are not perfect, but they do "work" within limits

The rules for a car with factory-spec hardware and one with hardware modifications are totally different. Once you start changing hardware, I would be very, very careful about who I trust. I'd want to be monitoring WB lambda and EGT myself, to make sure everything is correct. Maybe the ECU will work wonders, and adapt well to the changes. Maybe the custom mapping will be spot on, and the ECU won't have to fill in the blanks (if it can). Maybe it won't. I'd rather know.

For cars with stock hardware, most cheap "stage one" maps (at least for petrol turbos) will just wind the boost up for a nice cheap "kick", as many (most?) factory ECUs are mapped a good way beyond the factory boost pressure. There is most likely absolutely nothing wrong with taking that approach, except that the mapper is probably walking away with a larger margin than the one who has a self-written map, even if it's half the price. Of course a carefully applied MBC is cheaper still...

Some will want the reassurance of a map which has been further optimised. You get what you pay for. You are most likely, on average, getting better value out of the more expensive map - there will be more R&D time (cost) behind it per pound you're paying for it. Would I put a "cheap and dirty" map on a P1 T5, where it's well documented that there's headroom in the factory map? Yeah, sure. The difference will be marginal, and the cars are now far too cheap for £300+ stage one maps, IMO. Would I do the same on something more exotic / less "explored" by the DIY community? No, I'd want the reassurance that someone has done their homework. If I was taking that same £1000 P1 T5 beyond stage one, the game changes completely, and I'd want to be looking very carefully at the capability of the mappers involved.

In other words, a cheap map isn't necessarily a bad map. In some cases (stage one, for cars which have been well researched by independent people) there will be no worthwhile difference in an expensive map. In others, the peace of mind of knowing the map has been extensively tested by a specialist is well worth a little extra. I, personally, would not want something I considered to be a "generic" map flashed to my D5 (but I would certainly think about it for the R).

On the other hand, there is some absolute tinkery goes on. A friend has spent a considerable chunk of time getting inside the various mapped Clio Williams ECU ROMs there are floating around. One of the better maps is ruined by the genius having programmed "Mapped by Dave's Sick-ass Clio Racing Services" (or something along those lines...) where there should be code to control the idle motor. I kid you not.

I know a reasonable amount about mapping petrols (having mapped one from scratch with a programmable ECU), but I am a complete dunce when it comes to diesels.

Going back to my point that I would want something "proven" for the D5, I have a question for Don and Mikko. A friend has an S60 D5 (163) which dynos just over 200bhp, whilst also returning significantly improved MPG numbers. I presume an S60 is more slippery than my V70, but there's not much weight difference, and he's getting 150-200 miles to a tank more than me, every time. I don't believe that has very much at all to do with driving style - if anything, he drives harder than I do. This has, understandably, caught my attention. 200bhp and a good 10mpg improvement? I want this!

The problem is, no-one seems to know exactly what the map is. The guy who did it a couple of years ago seems confused. It might be a Rica map, or perhaps an Autologic map (although they don't seem to list Volvo under "performance"...?)...maybe Superchips? It's a bit of a mystery. I guess his memory isn't too great...! Anyway, assuming that we can't find out what his car is flashed with, and that I can't exactly go around trying different maps until one improves the economy, is this something that either MTE or Shark can offer?

The impression I get from owners is that MTE's map gives a solid power upgrade, but fuel economy numbers will be untouched. I don't have a problem with that, and it's not a criticism, but in my particular case, I need some sort of financial incentive in the form of fuel savings, given that a remap is probably finish off my already weak clutch. Is it fair to say that I can't expect to see a noticeable improvement in MPG from the MTE map, Don? I'd like to emphasise that I would not like to see anyone take that as a negative point - it just means that it wouldn't be for me, personally. The impression I get from owners is that it's not intended to improve economy (at least not significantly), but I'd like to confirm it.

Mikko - what can Shark offer on this front? Does the standard map improve economy on cruise, and if not, can a custom one be made to do this? I'm certainly not looking to ring its neck (123d / Alpina D3 with 30psi of boost from the factory spring to mind...Jeeeeesus!), but 200bhp (12psi up to 17-18?) and a nice MPG boost would be well worth a reasonable investment to me. My car has done a lot of miles, so I don't want to push my luck.

My understanding (and I'm an absolute beginner with diesels) is that running diesels lean (to a point, I presume) doesn't do any harm (unlike petrols), and running them rich is actually more dangerous, as EGTs rocket, hence why many of the more serious DIY diesel tuners I've seen appear to have an EGT gauge rather than a WB lambda probe (whereas petrols tend to have WB first, then EGT). There's still a stoichiometric ratio for diesel fuel, but it's almost a side issue. On that basis, leaning it out on cruise shouldn't cause a problem, whereas it would be a big no-no with a petrol engine.

cheers

James
