I worked in sales for 4 years (VW then Audi) and during that time I'd get a new demo company car every 2-3 months. The chief mechanic swore that after 500 miles it was best to drive the car harder than normal, ie up to the redline, which would help the pistons bed in to the cylinders better (ie the cylinder is very fractionally expanded thus reducing friction which improves the perf.&econ). He claimed after 10,000 miles it was too late after that to make a difference. Just keep a close eye on oil levels as all new engines burn additional oil in the first 10,000 miles. This goes against your gut instinct after parting with so much money but I saw significant improvements in performance&economy in demo cars that were 'pushed harder' early on-won't do any harm as long as oil level doesn't drop too low. Hope that helps

On a more serious note I have heard similar stories regarding the running in of engines. |

I read in a few places that one should drive it hard from day one. It was mentioned about bedding the pistons in and getting the seals. The same article mentions that by 500 miles its already too late. It suggested that it needs to be done in the first 50 miles from new. I did and have seen no detrimental effects.
My best yet is 657 miles from 1 tank almost all motorway around 70-75 indicated. Work out to be 43.8mpg. Normal driving I get around 38-40. D3 drive 2010 |

All this talk of the engine loving being booted at an early stage in its life sounds like the stuff of myth and legend to me. The engine components will be a little tight when new and will loosen off at some point during the first few thousand miles. I prefer to allow the engine to bed in gently during that time but then again I am of the "more mature" generation where running in was always considered necessary.
Modern engines using high tech lubricants and factory preparation may not require such nurturing but it still sounds sensible to me. Having been a mechanic during my early working life (in a Volvo fanchise) I am not surprised to hear the opinion passed to the forum member. In my experience mechanics were not renowned for careful considerate driving but pistons and seals do not benefit from the engine being thrashed, they wear quicker.

Got the car two weeks ago, second hand, 2300 miles on the clock. A stunning vehicle!
But what a shock to the wallet, I've had a V70 D5 2.4 for 8 years put over 100,000 miles on it and it was still showing 50 to 55 MPG which in real terms was more like 45 - 50 MPG We have put 600 miles on the XC60 cruising round the Highlands over last weekend, this car is only returning 37 at best. It looks like I've been taken for a mug by the glossy brochure or it's simply the engine needs to "bed in" over a further 10K miles. I'm simply left with mixed feelings over the car, I'll report back in a year when I've got say 15K on the clock. Has anyone one else found improved economy and what MPG are you getting? Bob |

Don't worry too much. I have the D3 and it varies between 36-40 mpg (on the dash) over 24000.
