Great news guys!

Simons will supply the front down-pipe, centre-section and over-axle-bend (no rear box) to Jetex. Jetex will supply in addition a mild steel Maxi 51 rear box for £198+vat. Stainless rear box is also available (like mine)

Ring Alan Jones at Jetex on 01789 298989

You'll also need an angle bracket, 2 x u-clamps, an extension pipe (you'll need to cut it to fit) and an angle bracket and hanger - I paid in total about £15 for that lot

Alternatively, Simons will make up a batch of 10 complete standard systems with twin tail-pipes. But it works out at about £270 per system.

is it worth just installing the new rear silencer above, or should i replace the lot?
I'd really recommend spending the money on all the sections you need to get free flow at higher revs. ( I think you already have twin down pipes. If you don't have twin down-pipes then fitting these or the Simonz manifold is even more important then rest of exhaust.... from what I see on previous posts.) My Simonz works well on the existing twin down-pipes and I heard that the Simonz manifold was difficult to fit.

Bolting the exhaust on was a very dramatic change per £ spent. It is probably the reason why I haven't gone on to spend money on sourcing and fitting the overdrive that I expected I would do. We drive similar Irish roads and I believe you also don't have overdrive.

You will not regret spending the money. Haggle the price down while you are buying other parts. I think you are getting parts from Simon. Remind him how much you have spent and how much you are likely to keep spending.

I'd also recommemd that you go for the stainless twin rear section as above for appearance.

I note the comments on posts about difficulty fitting the Simonz. I gave a tyre / exhaust depot and extra 40 quid to fit it when they put 4 tyres on which I had aleady got a discount on. I think it was £40 well spent.

That added to the £125 I paid for the Simonz (centre & rear & fitting kit) ...including next day UK to UK shipping........... (while buying £ 50 of other parts in Oct 2009). Posting that comment may bring the price down a little. HAGGLE !

I think it can only be a mater of time before the stainless twin tail pipes are what everyone buys in the standard purchase. They are so much more desirable that the suppliers will have to adjust what they stock.

hmm, as much as i like the twin pipes.. scandcar are coming in way cheaper than Brookhouse, jetex, etc.. on the 'normal' simonz 2inch rally pipe.. esp with euro/gbp conversion.

looks like i'll have to do the boy racer thing for a while and go with the coffee can for now..

Oh, shame! Will Scandcar not do you a system without the back box then buy the odd bits somehwere else? I got mine on ebay for £55 then bought all the other bits from Jetex.

Smile progress update

hi folks,

received my final purchases this week (simons exhaust and tachmeter) so am now ready to go ahead with the build.

i went into a small garage last week, where the owner is a very successful rally driver using classic mini's. Turns out he also used to rally amazons in the 80's, so was delighted to see my car.

we ran through all the parts and also did a leak down test and sure enough, the exhaust valve on cylinder 1 is leaking, but piston rings, etc all appear good.

long story short, he was incredibly enthusiastic about the build and he's offered to do the work for me, so i've booked it in for 29-30 June..

i think, given this is my daily driver, he's potentially just saved me a few weeks of agony...

so final shopping list ended up as: -

- Ported/polished/hardened b18b head
- Twin HS6 SU's with K&N filters
- Separate inlet and twin down-pipe manifolds
- Steel timing gear
- D-Cam and followers
- Choke cable update
- Tims Tachometer
- Simons 2 inch pipe
- Gasket set

hopefully this will allow me to leave a little rubber on the road...

PS. just to note, Brookhouse came through for me every step of the way.. Price and delivery has been matched or bettered in every purchase, so fair play to you Simon

thanks a mill...

Sounds great - looking forward to hearing what you think of the final result.

Can you pass on details of the guy who's doing the work for you? (only if you want to). My B18 needs a bit of work and I'm trying to decide between doing it myself or handing it over to someone who'll have it finished long before I get around to getting started.....
