Default AWD feedback

Clearly it isn't for some people or some vehicles. I estimate I have driven around 500,000 miles so far, in all types of vehicles, but mainly FWD, with some 4WD and a few years with RWD Mercs and two TR6s, so I hardly consider myself as inexperienced. However, I do know my AWD is working, but there is no feeling as far as I am concerned. Surely it is possible to agree that different people will experience it in different ways, which would suggest that some kind of indicator (positive or negative) would be sensible?

Cheers,

Kevin

I don't see the point of just looking at the drive shaft and saying it's still there. It's hardly going to fall off is it? Maybe it would be an idea to ask Volvo themselves if the check should be that it turns when the front wheels do, and if the road test should reveal that the AWD is working.

What bluetooth kit have you got?

My XC90 has the fancy system with a built in phone, but I have to remove the sim card from my phone and insert it in the dash

Done 3600 miles last month (February) with no faults

I got the Volvo dealer fit option bluetooth. Works ok most of the time but has a habit of disconnecting from the phone now and again. Its voice activated. You tell it what you want to do i.e. Call Jim and then its asks if its correct, you reply yes and it calls from there. You have to enter the numbers to voice dial in your own voice so it can recognise it which takes a while but it generally works fine.

I found it most telling that the service staff knew a great deal about the AG and the sleeve itself, almost predicting my questions. Much more than would be expected for a "relatively uncommon" failure. Anyway...

£87.50 for new sleeve
£246 for labour to remove AG, replace sleeve & seals.

I have to say, the difference is virtually imperceptible, certainly not chalk and cheese despite having made sure it was AWD around those bends (and yes, have driven many 4wd,fwd,rwd). There is a degree of feedback but if you don't know what you're looking for I think the average driver would never know.

Agree with languageservicesco in that this thread is moving away from its original point. I still think there are loads of XC90s out there on 2WD with owners none the wiser. A tiny fraction of owners actually post on these forums - its not a true representation.
Where did you manage to get the sleeve alone done? I've just had to replace the whole angle gear (as an exchange unit) on my car because the dealer wouldn't supply the sleeves on their own. The gear itself was fine but the splined sleeves on the input and output shafts were shot. Your £350-ish bill would have been a lot more palatable than the £1225 I paid

Splined sleeves plural?? I thought that there is just the one on the input side of the AG (no. 19, image part no. 9495034)? The AG is a very robust piece in itself and rarely fails - its the input sleeve between the trans and AG that is the weakest link.

I have heard of whole gearboxes having to be replaced because the sleeve has been "impossible" to separate through corrosion - although there is a dedicated puller to do the job apparently. Interesting info here.

Volvo dealer (Harratts) replaced the sleeve on mine, no issues. Only thing is, I'm keeping an eye on any weeping from the AG as the full seal set was not replaced (only sleeve seal) and the shavings from the stripped sleeve can perish them -- we'll see with time.

Sorry, I was wrong about two sleeves. Not wrong about the dealer refusing to supply a sleeve and insisting on exchanging the entire angle gear (which, as I said above, was fine!)

Bill was:
Angle gear exchange: £756
Gearbox sleeve: £87.50
Gearbox seal: £11.80
Driveshaft seal: £12.60
1ltr angle gear oil: £23
3ltr gearbox oil: £34.80
+ labour + VAT
£1225.56 in total

Not happy about that. Not happy that Volvo refuse to accept the part was not up to the job. Their loss, I'll never buy another Volvo.
