As far as I know, yes.

Theres not much point asking me any detailed Qs on the earlier systems though, as I have never used them.

Not quite.

The updates are progressive so its not possible to install the 2014 update on a system with 2004 firmware. There was one or two major updates, these have to be installed first, 2006 and 2010 I think. Then the latest 2014 can be installed ...

So, check for system updates before any updated maps then
then.

Oh dear, thought I'd cracked it, followed your post on bit torrents, used ImgBurn on a verbatim DVD +R DL, at slowest possible speed (x 2.4) as per T1sh0, tried loading with engine running, turning off and back on again, as per owenfackrell, and failed. Looks like your post this morning could be the reason for my failure. It's a 2003 xc90 with "settings"
SW version 00000638

HW version 0030657390 A

SW area EU

That's all. Will try to attach photo, but is anyone able to advise what I need to get this sat nav up and running.

Photo upload failed!

Mines also a 2003 XC90. My disc that came with the car has a copyright date of 2005 printed on it but all I'm getting is a message that tells me it can't read the disc, please reinsert.
My settings read thusly:
SW version 00000860
HW version 0030657526 A
SW area EU
I have tried cleaning the lens with a disc and stripping the unit and using a cotton bud and lens cleaner. Still the same. Would this be a mis-match of HW and SW or is my disc drive shafted. I would love to get it working and obtain the latest maps but I'm not sure what the problem is. Anyone got any ideas?

Default 2014 Update

Alex,
Sorry the system wont let me PM you. I have got a 2011 XC90, that has never had an update. I think you mentioned you have the 2014 maps? If so, would appreciate a copy. Happy to pay you for your trouble.
Cheers
Ben

Hello RMWxc90,

This is strange! My maps were from 2005 and car is 2005 anyway. Last year I installed 2012 maps and I believe it did a firmware update as far as I understand from software as I needed to wait few minutes for system to load. With 2014 I didn't need to wait even a minute and everything went smooth as ever.

Perhaps it isn't a bad idea to get 2012 disc first load it and then exchange with 2014 one. Although if you ask me Volvo should have made sure each update has firmware update of DVD player. I mean I would have done so for sure. I am thinking of sending email to Volvo asking them!

What about turning on the car and opening the player removing DVD and putting it back on. I had some issues with my own made 2012 copy until it loaded up first time. Then all went well!

Chesney, if you look here, http://www.volvoxc.com/forums/showth...needs-workshop

a post suggests your SoftWare is year - 08, week - 60,? Don't understand the week but if Bigstoo is correct about the year, perhaps the system is not backwards compatible?

Thanks T1sh0 for the reply,
Have now tried your suggestion of reloading with car running, still didn't work, made it think though, as I had a "Please Wait" first before failing. Will try obtaining older copies and seeing if that works.
