EGR valve
I just wanted to share my recent EGR valve experience with my 2006 V70 D5. Over the last 2 months I had two episodes of loss of acceleration. each episode lasted about 200 miles and the second gave me an engine management alert. I took it to the nearest garage who gave me a diagnostic printout showing EGR valve problems along with a quote of £300 for a new valve plus labour.
I live in France and had to return so wasn't able to take the London garage up on their quote. My garage in France informed me that the EGR valve on my Volvo did not need replacing only cleaning. I left the car with them and they duly cleaned it charging 3.5 hours plus 30 euros for the cleaning kit. I drove the car 1,000 miles to Amsterdam and back yesterday and it was all fine again. One footnote to this is the fact that from about November onwards I noticed that my temp guage would drop, and drop quite a long way, from its normal halfway position whenever I was in slow moving traffic. On the way back from Amsterdam yesterday I enjoyed several traffic jams en route and noticed that the temp guage was once again staying put at the halfway mark. So it occurred to me that this phenomenon of the falling temp guage may well be an early warning sign of an EGR valve in need of cleaning. Can anyone verify this? |

Did mine today.
What fun, together with oil, filter, air filter, PAS fluid, diesel drain. It was very messy as I dropped a litre of old dirty oil on the drive in error. The 4 crank bolts I ordered turned up incorrect, so could not change my timing belt on the D5... What a shame, I was looking forward to it.. |

Right thought I'd report back, must say Tickover seems smoother as does driving in general, definitely recommend anyone with basic mechanic skills to have a go.
Something I have noticed is that I was having trouble before with the soot filter message appearing at least twice a week, go for a drive and it would clear, was getting around to either removing it or fitting new, since cleaning the EGR the message has not reappeared? Is this coincidence?? |

Having just purchased my first diesel car, V70 D5, 52 plate FVSH with 130k miles. I'm guessing the EGR pipe has never been done, as it was owned by a professor of a university.
So my job for this weekend, will be to have a go. Is it ok to clean the EGR pipe with Wynns carb cleaner? As it says for petrol engines... |

On the subject of EGR blanking, I though I'd share my experiences.
I decided to blank it between the EGR outlet and the mixer pipe that everyone always cleans the muck from, using a shaped piece of aluminium can. I spent many hours at the blackboard with a calculator to work out which one to use. After a quick call to Cambridge to double-check my findings, I settled on Old Speckled Hen. Perspiring from the thought of the fabled ~'Emissions service required' light/message on the dashboard popping up, I cranked the engine. To my wonderment, no message. A 5 mile test run (and subsequent 80 mile journey home) confirmed that I would *never* see that distasteful message. As another user suggested in another long-buried thread, I do have the 'ECM 4405 EGR Low Flow' (or something to that effect) code coming up with Vida attached, but I can easily live with this. So, 20 minutes work, no more nasty black gunge clogging up my intake tract and no EML light/message. Winning. At some point I'll pluck up the courage to whip off the inlet and clean 130,000 miles' worth of hard-to-reach soot from it. Last edited by Coventry; May 2nd, 2013 at 12:24. |
