I thought that the R originally meant "Rally" as Volvo used to be big in that area. It only really turns up in my memory with reference to Touring Car, but I vaguely recollect reading somewhere that Volvo used to have a R-Sport (or something similar) division in the 60s as well just like Ford used to. I can only assume that the R in that is also linked to "Rally".
I'm guessing though and I get the impression that strbryan knows........come on put us out of our misery! |

As hardly anybody remembers or knows anymore I think even Volvo change the meaning to suit each new marketing drive. In the UK and US it may as well mean Race anyway. The job's done in pointing out the car's a bit special. Just like adding "T" for turbo but different, and therefore (possibly) better.
It occurs to me that Honda have their Civic Type "R". Perhaps it's a secret conspiracy? They're all in on it....... |
