I've just bought a '93 960 2.9 Auto to replace the 940 2.3 LPT Auto that I didn't really dig. Seemed like a good idea and the consumption figure I looked at suggested the 960 should be broadly in line with the 23mpg or so I was getting from the 940. But I'm getting 17mpg for the same type of driving. I've had it in the garage this afternoon and their analyser say's it's running perfectly. I know it's been looked after and I'm wondering if this is the premium I'll be paying to enjoy driving a rear wheel drive Volvo. I am actually fairly amazed at how different the 940 and classic shaped 960 are despite their almost identical external looks.

My 760 was getting a rather absymal consistent 20mpg. But having had the breathers cleaned out, exhaust sorted and the fuel filter changed its improved a lot... Took it on a 180 mile trip the other week and it did 31.5 mpg with a boot full of my brothers uni stuff
I'm hoping it will get a fairly consistent 25mpg in average driving now.

I have an '89 740 GLT 16v. average between 25-30mpg usually motorway/cross country mixed driving, 70-75 mph on motorway.
I tried sitting it at steady 60 mph and it seemed to make so little difference I couldn't be bothered. it does what it does so I live with it, only seems to REALLY guzzle if you take full advantage of all the power and sit at silly speeds. My old 740 TD once managed 44 mpg going from south wales to Brighton, sat between 70-80 mph. I miss it. if you have a 740 with that wonderful D24t engine then cherish it. theres nothing else out there like it. |

My 1989 740 GL Estate does up to 32mpg on a long run and down to 25mpg in urban winter commuting with the automatic choke going. Overall it is about 28mpg.
It got steadily worse a while back - and the local back street garage smelled petrol when he was working on the offside rear brakes. Investigation revealed that the metalwork on the fuel unit (i.e. the metal 'lid' that screws into the plastic fuel tank and carries all the tubes and pipes etc) had corroded and was allowing petrol to evaporate out of the tank. I bought a second hand one which the garage fitted which seems to have fixed that problem. |

good run
Did 375 miles on a tank, including a 200 mile run to Stansted and back
Then put £95 of petrol in this afternoon, a full 70 litres That's only 24 mpg

I reckon that the car I just drove back from the UK to CZ (1989 740 GLT 16v) averaged about 8.5l/100km!! Amazing! All of the trip without overdrive and 800km with half an exhaust!! ;-)
Oooops...maybe not...recalculated that at just over 10l/100km... :-/ Ok...so to be exact...9.4l/100km or 29.8mpg (I think!?) Thats quite good!! If I'd have had overdrive working I reckon it would have been around 34mpg... Last edited by czech240; Dec 19th, 2011 at 21:34. |

When I had my 745 (2.0 manual) the best I got was 41mpg from Leicestershire to Plymouth driving like a granny (50-55 all the way with no traffic) Some of the interior wasn't in the car (I was surprised how much the sound proofing/carpet weighed)

Exxon valdez fuel consumption - update
Just re-visited this thread and the Valdez's average fuel consumption has IMPROVED! - it's now 29.66mpg overall up to the start of December based on trip, total odometer and fuel receipt figures. Can I haul it above 30mpg?
