Hello everyone.
First of all - thank you BestGear for this great instruction. Really helpful.
I have a question about that spring - how exactly do you put it back in?
Did this repair today on my '07 V70 and everything went smooth until I had to put the spring back in. I spent like 2 hours trying to do that and no result.
I suppose I am doing something wrong.

I just spent most of the afternoon doing this fix on mine, but the problem for me was that the spring inside the handle was broken. I tried to manufacture a suitable one from my box of bits, but couldn't get it right. Of course, you can't buy just the spring now, can you!

I called FRF to get the price of a new part - £108 inc VAT+P&P. Ouch!
Then I had some inspiration...

I had to try several different types of peg to find one that would work.
Ours either had a spring that was too small or no spring at all, but the neighbours had left their washing out (in the rain) so I nicked a couple of theirs..

At first, I tried to put it in the place where the original spring was, but that was a right faff, and eventually I gave up.
So after some experiments, I just took two springs, bent them apart to 90 degrees, and this did the job perfectly.

One tip - I dremelled off a small piece of the new metal rod to hold one of the springs in place. That way it won't come out when fitting the new hinge rod.

Price of my fix: £2.49 for metal rod (ebay). £0.00 for two stolen clothes pegs.
Could probably have saved the £2.49 by using a piece BBQ grill or fridge shelf.

I hope this helps someone.

Gotta love the opportunist, inventive Volvo owner - Obviously you gave your neighbour a couple of your pegs in exchange...

Cheers

I just nipped down with some pegs for them, so I have a clear conscience.
Their washing is soaked though!

Default Lock handle was too far gone, see what I did...

Well I am not too mechanically inclined, but persevered. And other than 1 of the 4 bolts being too rusty to remove properly it wasn't a horrible experience.

Until I got to the last step, knock out the rusty pin - the culprit of our troubles. Alas, my rusty pin was too far gone (See Photo). RATS! All this effort and full stop.

So, off to eBay I go. Only to find a sparkly new part for $32 USD (See Photo)!

I will finish the job later this week. Not bad for less than $50 and 1.5 hours.

This article gave me the confidence to try and fix an annoyance for years - my tail gate latch sticking. Thank you!!!

Sticking rear hatch handle also. Thanks BestGear for your excellent write up.

Pin a little rusty but handle moves OK, seems the spring has failed. To put off the job of taking the handle apart I put a small tubular spring on the cable to push the level away from the cable holder (sorry no photo), also lub'ed the pin.

Seems to work ok, the handle is fluid and returning. May buy me some time to get the stainless steel pin and attack it properly.
