Little note to say how good the guys are at PFS Volvo. The fuel pump I had purchased from them was faulty, got it sent back for testing in Sweden.

The testing was done and they said everything was working fine and couldn't see an issue. PFS had arranged to get it sent back to me as a spare, but got a follow-up email later that day.

When the Swedish guys where packing up the pump they had noticed that someone had put the wrong colour caps on the pump. So if you follow the colour coding the pump actually pumps in reverse. Fair play to PFS for following up, and pinging me a credit back in my account as the manufacturer admitted it was their error.

£50 back in my account to spend on other things the Volvo needs :-)

Why didn't the guys testing it notice that the caps were wrong when they were first testing?

Just for future reference Chris, unless it was a roller-cell pump (similar to a peristaltic pump) then i'd guess it was a normal impeller pump so would just freewheel in reverse without pumping anything in any direction.

Anyway, glad you got it sorted and a return of your funds you spent on it!

Apparently on this pump they have the different coloured contacts, but also a + & - on the pump. They would have tested it on the + & -, but I connected it on the colour of the contacts.

They must have only noticed the contacts had be attached incorrectly afterwards.

Oh well. its fixed now which is good.

I wonder how many more pumps have been assembled incorrectly Chris?

I don't suppose by any stretch of the imagination the actual manufacturers name appears anywhere on the packaging, leaflet or wherever?

Car failed the MOT again on emissions. The tester stuck it on the machine as soon as I got there and it failed on the CO2 reading as it was too high.

Everything else it failed on previously was good, just the emissions now.

Going to have a look on Monday and at the plugs and see what they look like. It does have a slight blow on the exhaust on one of the joints that I need to re-seal.

Any ideas what else to check? I suspect it could do with a good Italian tune up, but having no MOT or Tax I don’t want to risk it.

Do you mean the CO rading Chris? I don't think there is a failure of CO2 emissions.

Also what was the reading?

Also what was the reading?

Reading was just over 5, and the max is about 3.

Have you checked your air filter? Also disconnect the concertina aluminium hose from the air intake on the filter housing, check that manifold stub that links to the PCV to ensure it isn't blocked, add a can of Cataclean to the fuel tank and you should get it closer to 3.5% (the limit) or below.

Also consider you may have to renew the Lambda sensor, especially if the mileage is over 100k - in fact that may be all you need.

Get your multimeter and set it on 0-2V DC. Connect the black -ve probe to a good earth and the red +ve probe to the green wire from the Lambda sensor. Report back with your findings, observe it a while and note down exactly what it does.

Thanks. For the aluminium hose, do I remove completely from the car, or just the end from the air box?
