my bro has recently brought a VW air-cooled engine thats had a turbo bolted on, the bloke who built the engine says the turbo is off a Nissan 200SX (which do use Garrett) but we when got round to fitting the engine i noticed the pipe connecting the carb to the turbo has volvo printed on it. I know 850's & 70's use mitsubushi turbo's but wondering if the turbo could be off an older one, possibly 700/900 do any on of those use Garrett? (or any other volvo)

Uk market 740/760 turbos used Garrett T3's with 42/48 housings. Some later 940's had T25's and I believe (but don't quote me on it!) that the S80 T6 has twin T25's.

ah excellent one cheers, do you know if any of them come with carb or were they all injection (the carb on it looks like an old mini su sort of thing)

Certainly all factory Volvo Turbos were injection, but I believe that Volvo offered an aftermarket turbo conversion for 200's and 300's that were carb'd.

That's correct, the other R-Sport engine tuning kit (ie: the one I don't have!) was a bolt on blow-though carb setup (the reverse of what you have there...carb between turbo and inlet manifold) for the old constant depression carbs. They were typically assigned 'AT' suffixes, e.g. B230AT.
http://www.volvoturbo.net/AT4.JPG Carb turbo is kinda dodgy in my opinion...but that won't stop me turbocharging the 240 I'm picking up tomorrow if I find an R-Sport turbo kit! I already have the matching boost gauge... cheers James |

all the rotary turbos of the early 80s used a suck through setup , and they were quick enough , an SU carb of 2 inch will be plenty big enough .
each system has its own drawbacks , the suck thru having no intercooler and compressing fuel being one of them .

Ah James! I'm glad you've seen the light and are buying yourself a 240. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. If I were you convert it to lpg and avoid the jibes and pictures of petrol cans!!!! WELCOME TO THE 240 CLAN! Mike
